AUTUMN'S LIFE GROUPS STARTING UP: It's September, so several of our mid-week Life Groups (the new overarching title for Emmanuel's small groups) invite you to read up and check them out! These "open-for-investigation" groups and topics include:
  • The Gospel of John, an in-depth study on Thursday evenings (7 to 8:45 p.m.) at the home of Mark and Julie Letts. Email mark@emmanuelburbank.org for more info about this group that focuses on fellowship, building accountability, and spending deep time in the gospel written by Jesus' beloved friend and apostle. Restarts on Sept. 19, at 1432 N. Catalina Street in Burbank.
  • The Daniel Plan, a 12-week series from 2015's "Christian Book of the Year," by Drs. Rick Warren, Daniel Amen, and Mark Hyman. Beyond the strongly-scriptural 350-page book, it also features a goal-setting workbook, exercises, recipes, and videos that link faith, food, fitness, focus, and friends as essentials for biblical health. Also happening on Thursdays (7 to 8:45 p.m.), this group meets at Key and Cheri Payton's house (1214 N. Ontario Street in Burbank). Email key@emmanuelburbank.org for info. Starts on Sept. 19, and the materials cost is $10.
  • The Parables of Jesus, an ongoing men's study on Tuesday mornings in the Family Room (6 to 7:15 a.m.), facilitated by Scott Fraley. This group has met for many years, and thus has many sage wise men in it. It's ongoing, so contact Scott at emerald1@ix.netcom.com about the next Tuesday morning when you can check it out!

SPIRITUAL GROWTH CLASSES! Spiritual Growth Classes for adults develop "intelligent faith" in three categories of classes: Foundations, Christian Living and Faith & Culture, taught by equipped teachers. Starting Sun., Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. in the Lower Auditorium,  Emmanuel will launch a new system of Spiritual Growth Classes for adults that run on a quarterly basis (8-11 weeks). Here are this first quarter's classes:
  • The Community of Eternity (Foundations) by David Hoffman
Church. A word that has initiated countless thoughts, feelings, institutions, traditions, opinions, and divisions over the years. In this study, we will examine the Scriptures to see what the Church is supposed to be, explore history to see what it has been and embrace a future where the Church fulfills its God-given purposes.
  • Moving Toward Maturity (Christian Living) by Connie & Randy Karman
Each of us has deep human needs for identity, righteousness, and significance; asking ourselves, "Who am I? Am I okay? Where do I belong?" As we grow in faith, we see that we are not bystanders in our spiritual life, we are active participants with God, who is inviting us into relationship with him and one another. This class will study the words and actions of Jesus to learn how to be formed and transformed into his likeness.
  • The School of Prayer (Christian Living) by Teri Parker & Jennifer Bond
Power, comfort, guidance and humility are some of what characterizes the kingdom of God. Although these qualities can be developed through prayer, the people of God may not always experience this. Join us as we search the Old and New Testaments to discover how to move from prayers that may frustrate us to prayers that transform us.
  • How to Interpret the Bible (Christian Living) by Brian S. Chan
We hear that we're supposed to read the Bible, but how can we understand God's Word? What are the pitfalls? What are techniques for mining the treasures of Scripture? Be blown away by the Word of God by learning methods for studying and interpreting the Bible to feed and enrich your spiritual life.

GLS19@EMMANUEL wants to thank you, and invite you... On Aug. 8 and 9, 19 people from Emmanuel Church participated in the annual Global Leadership Summit held at Willow Creek Church in Chicago (though we actually enjoyed it, via simulcast, in Emmanuel's comfy Lower Youth Center)!

The inspired attendees included (L-R): Cheri Payton, Trevor Strang, Janessa Godwin-Austen, Kevin Mokracek, Hal Bond, Betty Fox, Shackeh Mastian, Lynne Strang (barely visible), Barbara DeRosa, and Key Payton. Also there, but not available for photo: Maddy Bond,  Davin Chambers, Jeanell Dennis, Brian  Hull, Billye Johnstone, Cindi LaCamera,  Don Ludwig, Debbie Ludwig, and Teri Parker.

And all gave GLS19 raves for world-class encouragement, motivation, and actionable leadership ideas to help them influence/lead better in their homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and witnessing-for-Christ opportunities! Further, the church has a few  reserved spots to do the same thing next year. So let Key Payton know ASAP if you're interested ( key@emmanuelburbank.org).
