June 2019 Edition
Pastor’s Ponderings
A few years ago, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton’s monthly message in Living Lutheran magazine was particularly inspiring to me. She said, “We are not called to be the church of the past nor the church of some distant future, but to be the church right now.” As I am writing this, I am working on my June 9 th Pentecost Sunday sermon, thinking about the early church, how the Holy Spirit filled them with fire and awe. When the Holy Spirit came on the disciples at that first Pentecost, the people around them heard them speaking in their own languages, a communication miracle! Bishop Eaton thinks that the church is in the middle of a 500-year cycle where we are experience a seismic shift. I don’t know about 500 years, but I do know that the 29-year-old Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Prescott Valley is experiencing one. We are in a time of change and much of this change is occurring because of the changing world around us. But I am excited! Great things are underway and I see the hand of God and the moving of the Holy Spirit in this place. Our Grand Canyon Synod Assembly theme this year is “Sing to the Lord a New Song” and I want to encourage each of us to embrace this idea.

Let’s try something new this summer and in the days to come, confident that we and all of creation have been redeemed by the Living God and God journeys with us in these days of uncertainty. Have some ideas? Let the church staff know! Willing to step up and be part of the change? Bring your ideas to a council member or church staff and let’s find new ways to be the church in Prescott Valley today, where the presence of God is felt and all are welcome!

I would like to spend this summer exploring new ways to communicate with each other and our community. We will be polling the congregation to find out what the best way to share information with you and exploring new ways to inform our neighbors of our upcoming activities. You will hear more about this in the coming days.

With more visitors expected over the summer, don’t forget to wear your nametag during worship! If you need a new one, please let the church office know.

Yours in Christ,
Pr Tricia
And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5

Interfaith Meal
Join us for hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, ice cream sandwiches, and wonderful fellowship on Friday, June 14 at 11:30am.
Usher and Greeter Training
Ushering and greeting is an important ministry at Emmanuel. Ushers and greeters are the personal representatives of our church and generally the first to meet people at the worship service. They are the ones whose smiles and warm welcomes help to set the tone for our worship.
Two training sessions have been scheduled for both first- and second-service ushers for the month of June as follows:
  • Training Session 1 – Thursday, June 13 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary
  • Training Session 2 – Monday, June 17 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary

Each training session will be the same and last only one hour. Therefore, you only have to attend one , not both, of them.
This is a great opportunity for any member who has an interest in this ministry to find out what is involved. We need additional ushers and greeters and would like you to join our team. If you need any additional information, click here to contact Gary Kiser .
Attention Musicians!
During the summer months our choirs are on a well-deserved break, providing an opportunity for individuals or other groups to share their musical gifts from June 2 until September 2. We welcome any volunteers from Emmanuel or from the community.

Please check the signup sheet posted in the music/copy room for availability (most dates are still open), and call Gene if you or someone you know is interested in sharing your musical gift!
New Member Sunday
We will welcome New Members to our Emmanuel family on Sunday, June 16.

The evening before, Saturday, June 15, we will gather for a welcoming potluck at 6:00pm, right after our Saturday Evening Service at 5:00pm, if you’d like to make an evening of it!

If you are interested in joining Emmanuel or would just like some additional information about us, you are invited to join the fun!
Summer office Schedule
As you ponder your summer schedule, if you're interested in helping out in the office around late July and August, let us know!
Summer Mission Trip Update
June 23-28, our 7-member team of youth and adults will be heading to San Diego, CA. Our team will be joining over 60 youth and adults from other churches to serve in soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food banks. The team will be lodged at the St. Andrews Lutheran Church (ELCA) in downtown San Diego. YouthWorks, a national Christian ministry, will be overseeing the teams, organizing the worksites, and leading daily fun and worship gatherings.

Please lift our team in prayer for travel, safety, teamwork and provision. If you would like to support our team, we will be having a bake sale Sunday, June 9. The cost for each person to attend the mission trip is $354.
Congratulations, Confirmands!
On Sunday, May 5 Emmanuel celebrated the confirmation of Ruth, Annika, Tawnya, Malia and Caleb.

Pictured here are the confirmands with their mentors: Tawnya with Betty Ellingham, Malia with Gail Kenny, Ruth with Sandie Allen, Annika with Clarissa Reynolds, and Caleb with Larry Gordon.
