Challenge Your Writing Skills & Knowledge
Emory University is well known for its creative and award-winning faculty of poets and writers. From crafting your own haiku to getting a personal head start on your college essay, you have an opportunity to learn from the best this summer. We have a writing class in each session to suit you. No matter your path of interest, honing your writing skills is a benefit to all students.
Creative Writing // Session A (June 17 - 30)
In this course, you will learn the elements of craft in short fiction and poetry. Beginning with a week of “flash” fiction, we will examine characterization, plot, narrative, and point of view. Students will compose several small pieces then craft their own haiku in the second week. The course will conclude with a student poetry reading.

Emily Leithauser, Poet, is a doctoral candidate in Emory’s Department of English. Her poetry and translations have appeared in various literary publications.
Writing the Personal Essay // Session B (July 1 - 14)
Personal narrative writing is a skill set particularly vital to creating great college-entrance essays. Students will learn the art of the essay by including literary elements common to novels and poetry to create vibrant, powerful essays. Readings include works by Edward Abbey, Amy Benson, Joan Didion, Annie Dillard and Lawrence Millman.

Dr. William Gruber, author and Adjunct Professor of Theater Studies, has been with the pre-college program for over 6 years.
Dramatic Writing Studio // Session C (July 15 - 28)
This intensive college-level foundation course teaches the basic principles of dramatic writing craft through in-class writing exercises, workshops, text analysis and the completion of a full first draft of a dramatic text. The course is designed to deliver as much value to the dedicated dramatic writer as it does to the pre-collegiate student interested in improving his/her narrative writing skills.

Jiréh Holder  is currently the Playwriting Fellow of the Department of Theater and Creative Writing. He is an Atlanta area playwright, director, and dramaturg.
All of our two-week noncredit writing courses are open for applications. Check out the full course descriptions for more information and apply now!

What was a typical day like for you?

Morning always kicked off with a daily Starbucks ritual with my friends. I’d take my S’mores Frappuccino with me to class, where we would start by sharing our writing homework from the day before. We also dug into creative nonfiction writers, from Lawrence Millman’s ventures through the North Atlantic to Joan Didion’s portraits of California dwellers in the 1960s. We spent about 3 hours every morning in class but it really flew by because Professor Gruber was incredibly interesting and engaging.

The afternoons and evenings were usually a mixture of excursions — from unique, fascinating places like the Civil Rights Museum to just fun, vacation-like destinations such as the Atlanta Aquarium and Six Flags. Sometimes we ate lunch or dinner in the dining hall, and other times we walked to fun restaurants near campus or went to the Farmers Market and then to Piedmont Park to relax. When I got back to my room, I’d usually write all evening, maybe take a trip to the library, listen to music, and just hang out with my roommate from China.
