Dear Steve,
DID YOU KNOW that 1 in 4 parents say their teen consumes caffeine daily or nearly every day?
According to a poll from University of Michigan, parents may not always be aware of how much they should be limiting caffeine consumption for teens. Unfortunately, soda is teens' top caffeinated product of choice, followed by coffee and tea.
Teens' brains are still developing, and excessive caffeine consumption can affect their mood, sleep, and school performance, along with other side effects. They can also become dependent over time, as is true for other drugs.
The good news is that the most common place teens consume caffeine is at home followed by dining out, making it easier for parents to intervene and help their teens reduce their caffeine intake.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also discourages caffeine intake by children and adolescents, and other experts suggest a limit of 100 milligrams per day for teens.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online | On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. The FDA sent a warning letter to Amazon in late December 2023.

Emotions and Chronic Disease
|
Steve: Chronic disease is on the rise, and will continue to, according to public health experts. Most equate chronic disease with lifestyle habits such as diet, alcohol, smoking, and lack of physical activity.
Stress also plays a huge role in chronic disease because it is inflammatory. One kind of stress that has gone relatively unnoticed, until a recent study from Psychology, Health & Medicine, is guilt.
Guilt is associated with remorse and regret related to an individual’s behavior and how it affects others.
The authors of the study found that guilt elevates the risk of chronic disease and pain. Moreover, if you carry shame and guilt, you are two times more likely to have a chronic disease. The authors suggest much more investigation into this link between guilt and chronic disease.
In the interim, if you often have guilty thoughts, we suggest that you speak with a mental health professional, or if it is feeling guilt about your diet and lifestyle habits, you can always talk to me about it so we can find solutions.
