Guided Learning Pathways: Exploring the BILT Model
Colleagues,
I am very excited to be working with the Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD) to further our Guided Learning Pathways efforts in the Career and Technical Education fields. Dr. Fager and I recently met with CORD leaders to plan activities that will begin this month and run through March 2022 for our CTE programs based on their Business and Industry Leadership Team (BILT) model. This work will result in the development of career pathways for each CTE program.
While still in the planning stages, a three-hour workshop for CTE faculty is being prepared that will allow participants to gather essential information and then breakout by department or program. CORD will also provide a template customized for SCC that will assist faculty in developing a map for each program area. This map will allow current and potential students to visually see their journey to opportunities in a given field.
While this work focuses on CTE programs, the entire college will be involved with the work of Guided Learning Pathways. To learn more about this important work, plan to attend the October 18 Presidential Forum, where Dr. Fager will present the basics and next steps. Our goal is to have this work completed by the end of the academic year to start to implement in the fall.
Appreciatively,
Dr. Annette Parker
President

Assessment Highlight – Authentic Assessment
|
The word assessment comes from a Latin word that means simply,‘to sit beside,’. Finding new ways to sit beside, and to get a clear view of student learning is imperative, especially during distance learning. Authentic Assessment involves the measurement of real life tasks that students need to be successful in the real-world, and in their disciplines. By utilizing authentic assessment techniques, students are given the opportunity to use high-level thinking to show what they know, and faculty to partner with students to move forward in their learning. Here are several powerful resources:
Definition, Research Articles, Framework, Rubric, Videos
Technique Videos paired with PDF Instructors Guides

|
Course Accessibility: Turn on the Captions
|
Do you think your students do not watch videos with closed captions? Consider this:
-
54% of all people use captions at least sometimes
-
80% of people who use captions are not deaf or hard of hearing
Enabling captions is an easy, proven way to increase student’s comprehension. Captions benefit non-native English speakers, multi-taskers, and those who prefer reading over auditory learning—in addition to students that are deaf or hard of hearing.
