Authorized Agents and Web Assistants received IMRF's 2025 Employer Survey on Wednesday, February 5. The survey topic is webinars and should take less than five minutes to complete.

Cautions on Hiring IMRF Retirees

All IMRF employers must comply with rules regarding when an IMRF retiree can work for a public sector employer. Violating these rules can harm a retiree's financial security in retirement and cause significant financial complications for your employer.


Many different factors determine whether a retiree's pension will be affected by working after retirement, including specific details about his or her work history and pension calculation.


To prevent return-to-work rule violations

To prevent violations of rules that govern working after retiring with IMRF and separation of service:

  • Always call IMRF before hiring an IMRF retiree, regardless of the hourly standard of the position the retiree will hold.
  • Instruct the retiree to contact IMRF to discuss how his or her pension may be affected.


Employers hiring individuals near retirement age (age 50 or older) should encourage those job candidates to contact IMRF about how return-to-work rules apply to their situation if they are currently drawing an IMRF pension.

Webinar structure

This 2-part webinar series prepares IMRF Authorized Agents to perform common IMRF tasks. Note: To receive a completion certificate, you must attend the online session live. Watching a recording at a later date will not result in a certificate of completion.


Together, these two 90-minute webinars cover the topics included in the former one-day workshop. Each webinar stands alone, and you can attend them in either order. Canceling your registration from just one module is not permitted.
