Black History Month: Hamilton Statistics

The City of Hamilton is home to a diverse community, with individuals from all ethnicities and walks of life. With this, Hamilton’s Black community has played a large part in shaping the cultural and labour landscape. 


Hamilton’s Black community grew by 40% from 2016 to 2021, to 28,415 persons in 2021 or 5% of our total population. 


Almost one fourth (23%) of Hamilton’s Black community had a Bachelor’s degree or higher in 2021. From this, Black women had a higher percentage in holding a Bachelor’s degree (57%) than Black men (43%) in Hamilton. 


Black men were higher represented in the Skilled Trades, with 64% of Apprenticeship/Skilled Trades related certificates and diplomas held by men and only 36% held by women.

Are you an Early Childhood Educator? We need YOUR help in identifying sector-specific challenges ECEs face in Hamilton. Workforce Planning Hamilton in collaboration with the McMaster Research Shop are looking for focus group/interview participants.

 

With the shortage of 8,500 ECEs anticipated by 2026 in Ontario, ECEs are crucial to a healthy education sector.

YWCA Encore Program

YWCA Encore is more than just a gentle exercise program. It also offers learning opportunities, practical advice, and a supportive network of fellow survivors.

YWCA Encore is a FREE 8-week exercise and education program that runs from April-May. Classes are designed for women who have experienced mastectomy, lumpectomy, or breast reconstruction surgery at any time in their lives. Each YWCA Encore class features an educational presentation by a guest speaker and time for sharing and discussion, followed by gentle exercises with a goal of increasing strength, mobility and flexibility.

FREE Income Tax Program

Flamborough Connects offers an Income Tax Program through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program from the CRA. Our program will open on March 4 and runs until the end of the calendar year (we offer filing outside of the regular tax season) and serves Flamborough residents. Our program involves residents dropping off their paperwork at our office in the Waterdown Library building, volunteers complete and file the income tax for them and the paperwork is available for pick up about 2 weeks later (we do not offer a clinic where income tax is done on the spot).

Our Personal Care Attendant WorkLINK course has returned! Interested in pursuing a career as a Personal Care Attendant? 👐 Our next WorkLINK course in partnership with @seasonsretirement can equip you with the skills and information to help you get there!


Over the course of 7 weeks, you'll develop skills in providing care and companionship, including administering bedside & personal care, explore roles and responsibilities, and identify relevant health conditions in older persons. Additionally, you will receive training and certifications to get workplace ready! Save your spot today!

Celebrate International Women’s Day at SheMoves: Celebrating Women in Public Transit Careers event on March 8 at the Hamilton Public Library from 11am-3pm. Hear from keynote speakers on women’s experiences in the transit industry and at HSR, and learn more about pursuing a career in transit and the various roles within HSR. The event is open to everyone.
