Employer of the Week: Discount Tire

The story of Discount Tire begins with a poor kid from New Hampshire. Challenged in school and growing up in a struggling family in the 1940, Bruce Halle looked like every other kid who would leave high school in the 1940s and disappear into a factory.

Bruce T. Halle was the founder and chairman of the nation’s largest independent tire retailer, Discount Tire Company, an 800-store, 22 state empire.

He opened his first store in 1960 and as the sole employee he was the tire technician, accountant, toilet cleaner and customer service representative. Bruce would go on to expand, first across Michigan, and eventually to 20 other states.

Bruce served in the Marine Corp during the Korean war. He credits boot camp as being an influential factor in his approach to business and life.

Today Discount Tire continues to follow Bruce's legacy and his 5 life lessons: Be Honest, Work Hard, Have Fun, Be Grateful, and Pay it Forward.
