Cannabis Group Challenges
Beliefs about Marijuana
The Information provided in the Cannabis Group challenges the belief systems of many members around marijuana use. It's helpful for participants to consider the role the drug may play in their recovery by asking questions such as:
"Would my marijuana use become an invitation to return to my drug of choice?"
"Would I become dependent upon marijuana?"
Many say that they use marijuana to relax and feel better. The Cannabis Group talks about alternative lifestyle practices that are healthier, safer, and produce similar effects without the risk of jeopardizing one's recovery. For example, AdCare Outpatient's
Mind-Body-Spirit
and
Mood Management
groups offer healthy life-style options that support recovery. To learn more, visit
AdCare Outpatient Services.

Mindfulness Can Help Prevent Relapse and Create Positive Life Changes!
Mindfulness can help anyone learn how to respond in healthier ways to triggers.
"It is especially helpful for people struggling with substances because they tend to act on whims, and be swept up by impulse,"
said Stephanie Pratico, LMHC, MT-BC, who leads the popular mindfulness recovery groups at AdCare Outpatient Services in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Being Mindful Forces us to Slow Down and Be Present
In a culture that glorifies multi-tasking, technology, and constant excitement, practicing mindfulness brings us back to the present moment. It forces us to slow down and be present. While many believe they are incapable of slowing down, stopping and focusing on one's breathing, thoughts, and feelings for one minute is a good way to start.

Take a Walk
Improving physical wellness is a great recovery practice that goes hand-in-hand with mindfulness. Taking a walk each day and looking for something different helps enhance mindfulness and physical health.
Create a Mantra
Creating and repeating a mantra or positive affirmation such as “I am healing” or “I can persevere” is another useful mindfulness practice. Enrolling in a mindfulness recovery group is beneficial as well, as members can connect with others going through the same process.
Set Goals
Setting goals can help. Try asking yourself,
“What is the best life I want to live and how do I get myself there?”.
Repairing the disconnection caused by substance use is long-term work. Mindfulness can help you identify triggers for relapse, set goals, and change behaviors. It is a powerful practice for getting and staying in tune with oneself, one’s surroundings, and one’s life path.
“I’ve seen people pull themselves out of some very dark places by incorporating mindfulness into their treatment – people who have been homeless, for example, get their careers back and turn their lives around,”
said tephanie.

Grief Resources Available Through Learn To Cope
We want to express our deepest sympathy to anyone who has lost a loved one to the disease of addiction. The feelings we go through after such a devastating loss may seem unbearable at times, and it is important to seek the support of others so that we can begin to heal. The Learn to Cope members and those Coping Today are “family” and we are here to help.
Everyone goes through the process of grief differently. The stages of grief do not necessarily go in order, and there is no specific timetable for the length or timing of each stage. It can be a complicated process. It is important to be patient with yourself and to work through these intense emotions in your own way.
