How Artisans in Jamaica are carving out new products, revenue streams & jobs from mineral-rich rocks & soil, by building on grants and training from the European Union-financed ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme. The first phase of the four year programme, which ended in December, was implemented by the UNDP Jamaica in partnership with the Geology and Mines Division of the Ministry of Transport and Mining.

IT equipment helping Development Minerals industry access previously unreachable deposits
IT equipment valued at approximately J$1,484,384 was handed over to the Mines and Geology Division (MGD) of the Ministry of Transport and Mining in March, to strengthen the capabilities of the Mining sector. The equipment included a computer server/storage area network (SAN); server racks and shelves, consoles; laptop; and tablet computer to enable staff to use the latest technology, as well as to improve the delivery of service, utilizing state of the art technology.

In his address, Hon. Minister, Robert Montague said technology was helping the minerals industry access previously unreachable deposits. "Geographic Information System (GIS): Mapping, spatial concepts, and time/space operations technology is absolutely essential to effective mining", he said..

The Jamaican Mineral Information System is an interactive web map, designed to catalog and disseminate geological data about mineral resources in Jamaica.


Using the map tool, users can zoom in to obtain information from the Mines and Geology Division on mineral distribution, quality, quantity, and accessibility via transport infrastructure. Jamaica reaches new milestone in Gender Equality Seal certification programme
Displaying their support of Gender Equality on International Women's Day on 8 March are (from left) Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon Olivia Grange, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Denzil Thorpe, UNDP Resident Representative a.i., Dr Elsie Laurence-Chounoune and Director in the Bureau of Gender Affairs, Sharon Coburn-Robinson. Occasion was the UNDP's International Women's Day event, 'Breaking Through to Next Level Gender Equality in the Jamaica Workplace.' 
The first local enterprises in Jamaica and the Caribbean to sign on to the United Nations Development Programme’s Gender Equality Seal certification programme about a year ago, have now completed a crucial milestone in the international ten-step process.

With this in mind, UNDP was happy to support the post COP youth consultation on Climate Change in Montego Bay on 29 March in collaboration with the Climate Change Division. Trash to Cash

The Tivoli Gardens Community Development Committee is partnering with UNDP to earn income through a Cash for Trash initiative targeting Coronation Market, and to strengthen relations between the police and citizens. UNDP is helping the CDC establish the social venture as a viable entity run by the residents for the residents. The project includes collecting trash from the Coronation Market and turning it into compost for sale.

Industry stakeholders have lauded the European Union-funded ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme for training hundreds, and awarding productive grants and other inputs, setting the stage for improving the industry’s contributions to jobs and economic growth and lessening its negative impacts on the environment.
