Corrissa's Journey with Dress for Success Cincinnati



This blog was written by Corissa Britten, a Dress for Success Cincinnati client.

 

"I grew up in some of the roughest parts of Cincinnati: Avondale, The Laurel Holmes Projects, and Over the Rhine, before it underwent rebranding with businesses, restaurants, and an entertainment district. Everywhere I lived was infested with drugs and violence on a day-to-day basis. After my parents split, my mom became addicted to alcohol and crack cocaine, which eventually took her life in a drug overdose some years later, right in front of me and my children. Growing up in a single-parent home, I sought "more love" to fill the gaps of what I wasn't getting at home, leading to me becoming a teen mom at the age of 17. Disappointed, my mom kicked me out of the home, and I became homeless for a short period before staying briefly with a friend..."

Intern Spotlight

This month's spotlights is on Abbie, our StyleHER Intern!


Abbie is a recent graduate with a major in psychology, a minor in fashion design, and a certificate in pre-art therapy, showcasing her diverse skill set. Abbie is currently enrolled in a one-year master's program in psychology with a specialized focus on community development.


Dress for Success Cincinnati serves as the perfect place for Abbie's dual interests, combining helping others with her love of fashion. As the StyleHER Intern, she brings a unique perspective to the organization, combining her creativity and expertise into the world of professional attire and personal empowerment.


In this role, Abbie works directly with our clients in the Style Studio, helping them pick the perfect outfits for their interviews and upcoming employment. She also performs follow up calls to our clients to check in on their employment needs and to schedule styling appointments.


Abbie reflects on her experience at Dress for Success with gratitude, emphasizing the profound impact it has had on her. Her dedication to our mission shines through, and she expresses sincere appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful cause.


Looking ahead, Abbie plans to return back to Dress for Success Cincinnati for the next semester to continue her internship.

What's Happened at DFSC

Dress for Success Visits Hondros College of Nursing


Last month we took our Mobile Career Transform Center to Hondros College of Nursing to style 13 women in professional outfits for upcoming interviews and internships!


Our Mobile Career Transformation Center allows us to bring our StyleHER studio on the road and provide our services to women who may face transportation barriers.

Thank You, GetWITit!


Last month, GetWITit hosted a donation drive for Dress for Success Cincinnati at their November networking event.


GetWITit is a non-profit organization, with the specific mission of addressing the declining number of women in the information systems and computing industries, through programs that promote awareness, address attrition, create opportunities to transition to tech, and preparation for leadership.

Girlhood (It's Complicated)

On display until January 14th 2024 // Cincinnati Museum Center

Girlhood (It’s complicated) explores the diversity of girls’ experience over more than 200 years and through approximately 200 objects. The exhibition examines the ways American girls, from Minnijean Brown to Naomi Wadler, have spoken up, challenged expectations and used their voices to effect change. By examining, preserving and sharing the complexity of our past, we can empower people to create a more just and compassionate future. Entry is included with Museum Admission.
