Hi Neighbors,

Our summer activities are picking up and I want you and your family to join the neighborhood fun!

We have several movie nights coming soon, including one at the Evergreen Village Square. Check out our schedule of events below and don't miss National Night Out!

In case you missed it, we received an allocation of $1.5 million dedicated towards the improvement of Lake Cunningham Regional Park – made possible after much advocacy and effort alongside Assemblymember Ash Kalra! While this funding is a significant achievement, it is merely the beginning of the much-needed resources required for the comprehensive transformation of Lake Cunningham.

I look forward to seeing you at our summer community events!

Best,

Domingo Candelas

Councilmember, San José District 8

Upcoming Events & Announcements

District 8 Economic Vitality Small Business Grant

I am working to ensure eligible District 8 businesses apply to this important grant – offering $1,000 to $5,000 in relief to small businesses experiencing financial hardship.

It's important these funds get to our community and protect our local economic vitality. Stay tuned for some of the additional small business investments I am implementing over the next few weeks to further empower our neighborhoods.

Earlier this week I connected with small business owners to inform them about this important grant.

Advocacy for Lake Cunningham

Earlier this month on July 20th, I successfully advocated for funding for Lake Cunningham at the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority (OSA).

It is important to unite as a community to showcase the value of Lake Cunningham to our region. I'm grateful to OSA for moving forward on the $50,000 grant that will help support the Design and Environmental Review for an Emergent Wetland, enhance water quality and bring us closer to a lasting improvement that will ultimately help us improve our precious gem of a park.

Together, we'll make a positive impact on our community and restore the beauty of Lake Cunningham for generations to come.

Fire Safety in District 8

I had a productive meeting with members of the Association Fire Safety Committee at City Hall to discuss concerns such as fire safety, water conservation and various challenges facing the Villages.

I look forward to partnering on a fire safety workshop in the Fall. Keep an eye out for details.

Additionally, during this budget cycle I successfully advocated for $15,000 for CERT supplies. This investment is critical for empowering our residents in the event of a natural disaster.

Community Updates

July City Roads Update

The City's Department of Transportation (DOT) is continuing to implement their Pavement Maintenance Three-Year Plan (2023-2025)

These essential community infrastructure projects have been made possible thanks to funding from the voter-approved Measure T (2018) and SB 1 (2017) passed by the state. I take great pride in having fought for and supported this funding that has made our much-needed road work possible over the years, and I look forward to its continued completion in our community.

The following are some notable projects in District 8 to be completed this year:

1. Aborn Rd from Ruby Ave to Murillo Ave– Sealing

2. Fowler Rd and Classico Ave from San Felipe Rd through Evergreen Village Sq and Ruby Ave - Sealing

3. Silver Creek Valley Rd from Hellyer Ave to Yerba Buena Rd - Sealing

4. Tully Rd from Capitol Expwy to Alvin Ave - Sealing

5. Yerba Buena Rd from San Felipe Rd to Villa Vista Rd - Resurfacing

6. Local and Neighborhood Streets throughout Brigadoon Way and Daniel Maloney Dr.

7. Local and Neighborhood Streets throughout Coldwater Dr and Hayworth Dr

Several major and local streets are also announced for maintenance through 2025. Please view the GIS Pavement Projects Storymap for all updates and information.

Daniel Maloney Drive and Brigadoon Way

Not only were Daniel Maloney Drive, Brigadoon Way and surrounding local streets long overdue for repair, but they have also needed new crosswalk markings.

This is especially significant for our local students and Brigadoon Park visitors. The fresh lane markings also help with safer driving and speed mitigation. I look forward to seeing our remaining District 8 road projects completed.

Slow Down Pledge

We are deeply saddened to share the devastating news of a recent accident near Ocala Ave and King Road. An innocent infant lost their life, and two other pedestrians were injured in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to the families and friends affected by this profound loss and the difficult road to recovery ahead.

This heart-wrenching incident underscores the pressing need for expending Vision Zero in San José. Vision Zero is a vital initiative aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries, making our streets safer for everyone. We must continue to take steps to prevent such senseless tragedies from occurring in the future. Take the Pledge to drive the speed limit.

Community Announcements

Following the successful debut of Fiesta del Mariachi (FDM), the School of Arts and Culture at MHP (SOAC) is hosting its second annual celebration of regional Mexican music on July 28 and 29 at the Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza). The festivities begin with an immersive day-and-a-half youth workshop led by Mariachi Tapatio’s Musical Director, Manuel Caratachea, and a public Saturday concert. Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles, America's first all-female mariachi ensemble, headlines FDM in the heart of East San José. The inspiring group transmits its vocal power and pride through a strong and lively musical repertoire.

Join us on Saturday, July 29, for the best mariachi showcase featuring Mariachi Reyna De Los Ángeles, San José’s very own Mariachi Azteca, and Mexico Mariachi de Gilroy. The workshop participants will perform during the concert to showcase all they’ve learned.
