MAS-SSF Reaches New Families at San Juan

Unified’s Community Resource Event

On Saturday, October 18th the San Juan Unified School District hosted a Family Education & Engagement resource fair at the Arcade Middle School. More than 100 attendees had the opportunity to engage with around 20 vendors including MAS-SSF, REDA, CAIR, and IRC. Our welcoming MAS-SSF staff engaged with numerous community members who will directly benefit from our programs and services. Staff also shared flyers and brochures with nearly all attendees. More than a dozen guests joined our hour-long Shifa for Youth workshop, Raising Young Children in a New Country, and provided positive feedback to the presenter.

The District provided all attendees and vendors with a tote bag and water bottle at check-in. It also provided a light breakfast, snacks, drinks and halal lunch from Halal Bitez over the course of the four-hour event.

We connected with many new organizations that day at the Arcade Middle School and want our community to know about these helpful resources:

Thank You San Juan School District for Inviting Us to Participate!

With Care, Unity, and Understanding, We Can All Help DV Survivors Reclaim Their Strength and Rebuild Their Lives

MAS-SSF is proud of the work we do to support survivors of domestic violence, helping Muslim women and their children rebuild their lives. DV can be physical, emotional, financial, or psychological, affecting not just women but their children and extended families. Through shelters, counseling, crisis response, and a variety of community support programs, DV survivors can find safety, guidance, and hope. By connecting victims to these vital services, we show survivors they are never alone.

Over this month, we’re providing information on some of the many agencies that offer support to DV victims. Last week we let our readers know about WEAVE and the Domestic Violence Awareness Project. This week, we want to share information on more resources:

Peaceful Families provides year-round support for Muslim communities and has since 2000. It offers services, advocacy and training and materials to help DV victims, their families and friends. Download its DV Survivors Toolkit here. The team works daily to honor its mission to eliminate family-based violence in the diverse US-based Muslim community through the core values and models of conduct embedded in Islam.

Unchained at Last is a survivor-led nonprofit dedicated to ending forced marriage and child marriage in the United States. It provides direct services to survivors and works to affect system changes through legislation such as setting the minimum age women can marry to age 18 (some states don't designate any age, others as low as 12). If you know any survivors, let them know help is a phone call away: National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline: 1-888-373-7888
