Dear Friends,

We come to you with hearts full of gratitude. Gratitude for your support both financially, with items from our wish list, with your time, and with your prayers. Gratitude for the women who come through our doors who say they are ready for change. Gratitude for meeting those who have left who have taught us valuable lessons. Gratitude for the past three years of working with such amazing volunteers who help with transportation, classes, overnights, and presence.

One of the great gifts our women receive is the presence of our volunteers who become examples in their lives of how to live. Each volunteer or presenter who comes through our door brings herself – the greatest gift of all.

As I write this, we have just experienced another graduation with one more to come. This was a day of celebration of a woman who came to us in pieces. So many times, we took her aside and spoke to her about her behavior. Each time she tried to work at changing the negative patterns that had become her norm. Today she was able to stand up in front of the people who were present to celebrate her and speak of how she has learned and grown into a woman who is going back out into the world in a different way. She has learned to use her voice in ways that encourage. She has learned to trust the community. She knows now that there are people in her life who see her for the powerful positive woman she is.

Each time a woman graduates from Her Place she takes a piece of us with her, and we keep a piece of her with us. We learn and grow together. As we approach our third anniversary of opening, we see our three previous graduates who are thriving. Time, in a place of peace; where a woman can begin to heal, works. Some women take a year; some take more than two years. As we keep saying to the women: as long as they are working the program we will not put them out on the street. We are committed to making sure they have a place to live, a sustainable source of income, and a support network (that includes Her Place). Each of our graduates has been an active participant in these goals. We will not do it for them – they must make their own decisions and take the actions necessary to move forward.

We thank you for believing in the mission of Her Place and we thank God for giving us the strength and guidance to fulfill it.

God bless you all,

Residents Health Fund

Most of our women come to us with no health insurance. The state of South Carolina did not vote to accept the expanded Medicaid. Therefore, if an unemployed woman is between 18 and 65 and has no minor children, or is not on Disability, she is not eligible for Medicaid. Thankfully we have three clinics in Rock Hill: Palmetto Community Healthcare (Free with no insurance), Affinity Health Center ($10 per visit). And North Central Family Medicine ($10 per visit). We also take advantage of Catawba Mental Health which provides counseling services for $10 per visit.

The problem arises when we need a specialist. Currently we have a woman whose skin problems necessitate visits to the dermatologist at $145 per visit. We have had four visits in the past month. Going forward these visits plus medication will be quarterly.

If you want to designate a donation for the health of our women, just indicate that on your donation.

Thank you

Thank you for contributing to our education fund. We love having the freedom to help women fulfill their educational goals.

Volunteer Spotlight

Glenda Schock

I was inspired to volunteer at Her Place by my best friend, Donna. We have always enjoyed volunteering at church and around Rock Hill. My husband, Dr. Winslow Schock, started a charity, Cheer For Children in 1991 to help underprivileged children in Rock Hill. It was a joy and delight for 30 years.  Donna helped us with Cheer For Children for many years.

Donna saw the signs for Her Place and all the restoration going on and we walked over and asked what we could help with. We were there for cleaning up construction materials and helping to put up cabinets and moving in furniture on moving day!

I hope I can bring joy and hope to all the women at Her Place. I love driving the women to school and different appointments.  My life is full with loving Jesus and loving others. I am thankful for friendships made along the way and my wonderful family. I pray that all women could have the joy of serving and understanding that is why we are here in this world. I pray the women at Her Place and all women could know the love and kindness GOD wants for their lives and we are here for them.

Volunteer Spotlight

Lynette Bell

I was inspired to volunteer at Her Place because its core values represent hope to the community. I also believe in paying forward blessings received. It is a pleasure to have been a volunteer with Her Place for about 3 years in roles from cleaning, to serving as a driver, and my current role as a day manager. I assist with soft skills sessions for daily living with the residents. The experiences have blessed me beyond blessing them.

A moment that is etched into my heart was to have had the honor to drive three residents to Her Place on the opening day. With tears of joy, one resident hugged me as we loaded her bags into the car and thanked me for smiling at her. She said she was relieved to have a fresh start. I pray that time and compassion brings hope and peace to all of the women and families we serve. A message that I would share with someone going through a difficult season is to seek comfort in the small things in life and to take one day at a time.

Candle Enterprise Update

Our women work two days a week in the candle shop, hand-crafting each candle from start to finish — cleaning glass, setting wicks, pouring wax, and inspecting for quality. They receive a stipend for their work, which goes straight into their personal savings accounts. They chose the candle names themselves: New Beginnings and Journey, reflecting their own paths as they start again.

Each candle features USA-made glass, a reusable bamboo lid, and a clean-burning soy wax blend free of known carcinogens and synthetics. Safe for your space, life-changing for our residents.

Currently we can take only local orders that may be picked up at Her Place on designated days. If you are interested in ordering candles, Click here for the order form.
