2020 National School Bus Safety Week
|
|
In early October, the SCTPO partnered with Melissa Wandall, Speaker, Advocate Consultant, Spokesperson, Alert Today Florida, and Brevard Public Schools, to recognize #NationalSchoolBusSafetyWeek. Our bus drivers play a crucial role in keeping our communities safe. On Oct. 22, we shadowed Sandra Chafin, a veteran bus driver of 31 years, who chatted with us about the importance of motorists making sure to slow down and ALWAYS for school buses. They carry our most precious cargo.

SCTPO Publishes 2019 State of the System Report
|
|
The SCTPO annually evaluates the state of Brevard’s transportation system and the results are summarized in the State of the System (SOS) report.
The SOS considers usage and performance trends of various transportation modes — highways, transit, seaport, airport and space. Safety, mobility and congestion levels are monitored. Long term trends and possible problem locations are identified. Ultimately, the SOS provides technical guidance to the TPO on where and how state and federal dollars can be programmed to enhance Brevard’s transportation system.

Airline Schedules Continue Upward Trend into the Holidays at MLB
|
As the holiday season approaches, schedules from both American Airlines and Delta Air Lines continue to trend in a positive direction at Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) with the addition of more daily flights and larger aircraft to major hubs in Atlanta (ATL) and Charlotte (CLT), and the return of American’s nonstop service to Philadelphia (PHL). To prepare for the anticipated increase of passenger traffic, MLB has prepared to welcome all travelers with a calm, clean and safe travel experience.
Although airline schedules seem to be in a constant state of fluctuation due to the current global situation, check out the most updated outlook of air service at MLB throughout the holiday season: Holiday Air Schedule.

Proposed Roadway Improvements:
New Haven Avenue (U.S. 192) at McClain Drive.
|
FDOT Central Florida is currently working on initial plans for proposed roadway improvements at the intersection of New Haven Ave. (U.S. 192) at McClain Dr. in Melbourne.
Improvements include upgrading traffic signals, intersection lighting, reconstructing the median on the east side of the intersection to accommodate a crosswalk, constructing new pedestrian curb cuts, and ramps on the east side of the intersection to comply with the ADA. The project team is submitting initial plans, and we expect design to finish in July 2021.
FDOT invites your comments and questions about this project as we proceed through design. If you have a question or comment, email to Samuel.Jumber@dot.state.fl.us

Bridge Improvements:
North Courtenay Parkway (SR 3) Over Barge Canal
|
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is making improvements to the moveable bridges that cross the Canaveral Barge Canal on North Courtenay Parkway (State Road (S.R.) 3) in Merritt Island. Locally known as the Christa McAuliffe Drawbridge, this project will remove and
replace the locking system that locks the two sides of the drawbridge in place when the bridge is down. The project will also perform routine maintenance under the bridge deck, and perform steel modifications for enhanced strengthening of the bridge pier support system.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Throughout the duration of the project motorists should expect alternating bridge closures. When one bridge is closed, traffic will be guided to the other bridge, where single southbound and northbound lanes will carry motorists. This traffic pattern will be in place for approximately
one month per bridge, or until work is complete.
