| | Fire Station 5 Showcases Fire-Safe Landscaping | | |
Encinitas Fire Station 5 recently received a landscaping refresh designed with wildfire, and firefighter, safety in mind. The new exterior incorporates Zone 0 defensible space principles, which focus on keeping the area closest to a building as ignition-resistant as possible.
Right around the station, crews used noncombustible materials like decomposed granite and hardscape features, along with carefully selected low-risk plants placed at safe distances. This approach helps reduce the chance of embers igniting near the structure, limits flammable fuel close to the building, and supports easier long-term maintenance.
By putting Zone 0 strategies into practice, Fire Station 5 serves as a strong local example of how thoughtful landscaping can improve wildfire resilience while still keeping our public spaces attractive and functional.
