At Art House - Third Thursdays Through May, 6:30PM

(Formerly Bijou Cinema)

Hello Eric,

Encircle Film’s Women of Impact Awards Ceremony honoring 13 women for their invaluable activism and volunteer contributions to the Eugene/Springfield community on April 18th was a great success. It was an inspirational and rewarding evening with an awardees meet and great in the Art House lobby and courtyard. Awardee bios and pictures of the Women of Impact Awards event are on our website HERE.

Our final film of the season on May 16th, will be "The Janes" with Judith Arcana joining the post-film audience Q/A. Judith Arcana is a "Jane", a member of the Chicago underground service that helped thousands of women and girls get safe illegal abortions before the US Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade in January of 1973. Trailer and ticket reservation links are below and are also on our website, along with more information about the film.

"The Janes" screening is FREE, but you still need to reserve your tickets - a link to ticketing is below and on our website. Donations will be accepted at the door. We encourage folks to reserve their tickets in advance as we expect the film to sell out for both theaters. Be sure to check back with Art House ticketing if it says the film is "sold out". Should both theaters sell out, we will announce that on our website, social media, and Art House ticketing.

Again, our May film is the final one for Season 11. The Encircle Films Board is extremely grateful to our audiences this past year, and positive response to our documentary selections and Q/A panels. We look forward to seeing everyone for Season 12 beginning this September. Look for updates on our website and newsletters this summer as we announce documentary selections, events, and other Encircle Films news.

Feedback on how we're doing is always appreciated.

May 16th "The Janes"

In the spring of 1972, police raided an apartment on the South Side of Chicago – arresting and charging seven women who were part of a clandestine network. Using code names, fronts, and safe houses to protect their identities and their work, they built an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable abortions in the pre-Roe v. Wade era – a time when abortion was a crime in most states and even circulating information about abortion was a felony in Illinois. They called themselves “Jane.”

Oscar-nominated Tia Lessin and Emmy-nominated Emma Pildes’ revelatory documentary could not be more timely – "The Janes" offers first-hand accounts from the women at the center of the group, many speaking on the record for the first time. This galvanizing documentary tells the story of our past and, potentially, our future.
