FROM THE DIRECTOR'S DESK
Although we were not at Tanglewood this summer, we’re so grateful for all that we were able to do as a community. Learn more from Executive Director, Hilary Respass, about how we kept the magic of Tanglewood alive for the class of 2020 and our community.
A GIFT TO FUTURE STUDENTS
Robin Kim (Parent BUTI'17,'18,'19) has seen firsthand how attached students become to their teachers and friends at BUTI. That's why when her daughter Madeline returned from her third summer at BUTI still raving about her experience, Kim decided to make a gift.
IGNITING THE POWER OF THE COLLECTIVE
BUTI's Partner Network includes young artist training organizations from around the country with similar missions to prepare, support, and advance students from under-represented communities in their pursuit of musical studies. This summer, we brought nine of these partners together to explore what more we can do collectively to build access and participation at summer programs like BUTI.
"A BLACK HARPIST'S STORY TEDxBeaconStreet"
Ann Hobson Pilot, Director of the Young Artists Harp Program, shares some of her challenges as the first African American musician in both the Washington National Symphony and the Boston Symphony in the mid 1960s.
Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is recognized internationally as a premier summer training program for aspiring young musicians, ages 10 to 20, and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world’s great orchestras. Founded in 1966, BUTI is a result of the vision of Erich Leinsdorf, music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) at the time, who invited BU to create a summer program for high school musicians as a counterpart to the BSO’s Tanglewood Music Center (TMC). BUTI is a magical blend of the formal and informal, of joy and hard work. No one who spends a summer at BUTI is left untouched by the experience. For more information, visit bu.edu/tanglewood.
