by TE Deborah McEachran
     Cuba Partnership

For almost two decades, our sisters and brothers in Presbiterio el Centro,  Presbyterian Church of Cuba, have kept the doors open. They have kept the doors open even when our respective governments were keeping them closed. They have kept the doors open, welcoming us, teaching us, praying with and for us, showing Christ's enduring love to us.

Every two years, Baltimore Presbytery and Presbiterio El Centro have shared in the planning and leading of a four day retreat called the Encuentro. Translated literally as "encounter", the retreat has been a unique opportunity for some members of Baltimore Presbytery churches to get their feet wet in learning about Cuban culture, meeting members of Cuban Presbyterian Churches, and exploring the possibility of a partnership with a sister congregation in El Centro. It also serves as a reunion for those who have built long term relationships over the years. Combined with the retreat (actually held at a hotel!), each visitor from Baltimore Presbytery will also spend several nights in one of the communities of our sister churches. This opens the door to meet smaller groups of Presbyterians in one church, to enjoy worship and Bible study Cuban-style, and to experience a small slice of life in one Cuban community.

Spanish is NOT a prerequisite for attending the Encuentro, nor is it required for developing a partnership with a Cuban congregation. The prerequisites for a partnership are:  a commitment to a long term relationship between your congregation and a Cuban congregation; openness to learning and growing together; trust in the guidance of God's Holy Spirit; a willingness to visit and to be visited, enabling all of us to learn more about one another.

Our next Encuentro will be February 10-17, 2017.  You can register by clicking here. The all-inclusive cost will be $1200.00.  In order to apply for visas with plenty of time, a $300.00 deposit plus up to date passport information is due to the Presbytery office by Nov. 15, 2016. Passports must not be expiring within six months of travel dates. All Encuentro participants will attend 1-2 training/orientation sessions as follows:
  • For first timers only:  Jan. 7
  • For ALL participants together, Jan. 21.
Location and times to be announced. Please put these dates on your calendar. The doors are open!  Are you ready to join us?
