Mateo Cook, a sophomore at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), recently wrote a letter to the editor of the Pine Bluff Commercial. His letter was featured in the Opinion section of The Commercial on September 25, 2025. Cook was raised in San Diego, California, and is majoring in Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering.

UAPB Graduate Student Among Top Winners at AI in Agriculture Hackathon

Ram Babu Kurapati, a graduate research assistant in the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, was part of a team that earned third place at the AI in Agriculture Hackathon. Hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, the event gave graduate students from both of Arkansas’ land-grant universities the chance to address real-world scenarios commonly faced in the agricultural industry.

Puerto Rican Student Represents UAPB on International Stage in Aquaculture Research 



Samuel García Vázquez, a doctoral student in the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s (UAPB) Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, is advancing research that could improve commercial fish production while also breaking cultural barriers in the scientific community, according to his mentor, Dr. Dayan A. Perera, assistant professor of aquaculture at UAPB.

Haley Franklin, a native of Scott, Arkansas, graduated debt-free from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a 3.74 GPA. Her journey reflects resilience, faith, and a family legacy of caregiving.

UAPB Students Encourage Study Abroad Experiences

to Strengthen Foreign Language Skills and Cross-Cultural Competency   

Denise Reed-Thomas Gains Hands-on Experience


Five University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) students recently returned from a study abroad program in the Central American country of Costa Rica, according to John Peterson, instructor of Spanish at UAPB. Organized by the UAPB Office of International Programs and Studies and the Department of English, Humanities and Foreign Languages, the month-long program was designed to complement the university’s new Spanish language minor program.

FAFSA for 2026-27 Now Available!

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2026-27 academic year is now live. Filing the FAFSA is the gateway to the largest source of funding for higher education, including federal grants, loans and work-study. It’s also required for most state and institutional aid, even for families who don’t think they’ll qualify. 


All U.S. citizen college students are required to complete the FAFSA each year.
