End of year message
Paul Johnson
This will be my last FLASH! message as Superintendent of the Mill Valley School District. Thank you for an amazing seven years! I have been so privileged to work with an incredible group of teachers, support staff, and administrators, and a supportive parent body that is second to none.
I am grateful to our Mill Valley trustees, who care deeply about our students and staff, a board that is extremely high functioning and understands and practices effective governance. I thank Kiddo! for making such a difference in the lives of our students and community by supporting the exemplary arts programs and so much more here in Mill Valley. Thank you PTAs for the thousands of volunteer hours and fundraising on behalf of our schools. I will miss this supportive county and community!
Raquel Rose
I am honored to introduce Raquel Rose as the Interim Superintendent and I’m confident she will lead our district successfully while the Board searches for an exceptional superintendent.  She has been a rockstar at the Marin County Office of Education working closely with County Superintendent Mary Jane Burke. I know Raquel will help this school district continue to uphold the great work done in our schools.
Yours in education,
Paul Johnson

Energy Efficient Upgrade at MVMS

Next school year, not only will we see light bulbs coming on in the minds of the students, but also we will see more energy efficient lighting throughout the building! With Proposition 39, the school has been approved for energy efficient LED lighting that will replace old fluorescent lights throughout the interior and exterior of the Middle School campus.

The project started on the weekend of June 2nd and will be completed by July 31st, with no disruptions to any classrooms during the regular school year. Once completed, we anticipate the new lighting to immediately save 20-22% of energy costs for the Middle School!
Tam Valley Field Safety Upgrade

Over time, the Tam Valley Field has become damaged and due to several safety concerns, the field will be repaired and improved this summer. The soil has been settling for years, causing poor drainage and uneven surfaces.

The project, which will run from June 20th to August 17, 2018, consists of re-configuring the field slope and doing drainage, irrigation, and sod. The field and school will be closed during construction and we look forward to students utilizing a safe field when they return.
New Leaders in MVSD
At the June 13, 2018 school board meeting, Heath Caceres was announced as the new principal of Park School. Caceres comes to the district after five successful years as principal of Lafayette School in San Francisco.

Caceres has extensive experience in all phases of leadership, supervision, and academic achievement. With over 17 years of experience as a classroom teacher, he has taught grades 2nd through 5th, and math and science in grades 6th through 8th. He comes to Park School after completing five successful years as principal of Lafayette School.

“I’m very excited to join the Park School community!” Caceres remarked. “The opportunity to work at Park School feels like a homecoming since I grew up in Marin and I have lived in Mill Valley in the past. Park School has the reputation of having a dedicated and dynamic teaching staff coupled with highly engaged families. I look forward to working with students, teachers, and families as we sustain and grow a caring, supportive environment where all of our students succeed.”
Lisa Lamar has been hired as the new Dean of Students at Mill Valley Middle School. Lamar comes to Mill Valley from White Hill Middle School where she has been a teacher leader in 6th grade core.

She is a former long-term substitute for Mill Valley Middle School, so the district is excited to welcome her back.
Additionally, Aubrey O’Connor, who is currently a classroom teacher, will take on the Assistant Principal position at Edna Maguire Elementary School.

"I am extremely excited to step into the role of Assistant Principal at Edna Maguire next year,” O’Connor said.

“I love this school! I have had the honor of working at Edna for close to 20 years and this community holds a very special place in my heart. I am thrilled to continue working with our families, staff, and students and look forward to another amazing school year. Go Mustangs!"

Current Edna Maguire assistant principal Cristin Coleman will be embarking on a new journey as principal at Washington Elementary School in the Burlingame School District.
In April 2018, Mill Valley School District hired a new Executive Assistant to the Superintendent and Communications Specialist, Amanda Finlaw, who moved to the area after working as the Social Media Specialist for Pottstown School District in Pennsylvania. Finlaw is excited to modernize the district’s communications strategy and provide consistent updates to the Mill Valley community across digital platforms such as the district website and social media.
