End of Summer Party on Colton Hall Lawn
Celebrate the end of summer, and enjoy some lively, bilingual family music at Colton Hall in Monterey on Saturday, August 28 at 11:00 am. Bay Area artists Cascada de Flores will perform music and dance outside on the lawn, inspired by cultures of Mexico and the Caribbean. Please bring a blanket to sit on and a mask for anyone older than three. The Bookmobile will be there and everyone can visit the Library across the street after the show.
Preschool Storytimes On the Lawn
Back by popular demand, MPL is hosting storytimes for kids ages 3-5! For everyone's safety, we'll meet outside on the Colton Hall lawn, so bring a blanket or mat and join Miss Lisa every Thursday at 10:15 am across from the Library. Preschoolers, toddlers and parents welcome! Call (831) 646-3933 for more details.
Book Flight Book Club Ready to Launch
Monterey Public Library's first in-person adult program (post-pandemic), the Book Flight Book Club, will meet monthly on the outdoor Terrace starting Tuesday, September 15 at 4:00 pm. The first book is "Sweet Thursday" by John Steinbeck (October's book will be "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" by Grady Hendrix). Adults and teens welcome. Registration required, space is limited.
The Dog Days of Summer
Anyone who owns a dog will tell you that every day is "dog day" at their house, but it turns out, we have an actual National Dog Day to celebrate on August 26! Take time to give your family pet a hug or if you don't have one, go to a local dog rescue or shelter to find one. You get unconditional love in return (plus long walks and dog hair in the carpet)! And of course, when you need help with housebreaking, dog training, or fun dog stories, MPL has the topics "on a leash" with a wide variety of books and movies. Just call us at (831) 646-3933 to request some!
Digital Magazines
One of the frequent questions we received during our opening week was "where are the magazines?" Paper magazine subscriptions had to be canceled when all funds for library materials were eliminated from the City budget last year. Thanks to California Library Services Act funds, provided to public libraries that work cooperatively, 23 popular magazines are available online through Flipster. Locate the Flipster link on MPL's website (or the app in any app store), enter your library card number, and read full-page magazines on your device. From the August issue of the Atlantic to this week's issue of People and the New Yorker, you'll find a good selection of titles. Paper subscriptions to the Monterey Herald and the New York Times have resumed, but if you prefer your news online, you can get free digital access to NYT with your library card. As always, if you'd like to make a suggestion on how to bring back your favorite periodical, drop a comment in the suggestion box in our lobby.
