Meet Stacy W. Smallwood, PhD, MPH

Dr. Stacy W. Smallwood began serving as executive director on June 1, 2024. He previously held the role of associate professor of community health and founding director of the Office of Health Equity and Community Engagement in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University. He is also an affiliate faculty member in the university’s women’s, gender and sexuality studies program.
Dr. Smallwood has dedicated his career to advancing HIV prevention and treatment, especially in rural and underserved communities. His work includes developing faith-based interventions in South Carolina and leading efforts to expand awareness and access to pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, across Georgia.
He is a past chair of the American Public Health Association’s HIV/AIDS Section, where he established a fellowship program for early-career HIV researchers. He currently serves on the HIV Prevention Trials Network 096 protocol team, which focuses on stigma, equity and PrEP access for Black gay, bisexual and same-gender-loving men in the American South. He is also a member of the PrEP in Black America coalition, which advocates for a national PrEP agenda to support Black communities.
Dr. Smallwood has published more than 30 scholarly articles, essays and book chapters. He is principal investigator for Racial Equity to Advance Community Health (REACH) Bulloch and co-investigator for the Safe Water Together initiative in Brunswick, Georgia.
He holds a doctorate and Master of Public Health from the University of South Carolina and a bachelor’s degree in health and exercise science from Wake Forest University. He is also an ordained minister in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
