Arts Updates, Interviews, Calendar, Calls for Artists and Volunteers, Auditions --- It's All Here in Arts Blast, Arts Blast on the Air, and on Facebook. | Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere
Volume 5 No. 13| March 31, 2023
Notes from the Editor:
Marching right along into what I know will be an Absolutely Amazing April! March was a stellar music month for me. Seeing the Four Freshmen in person, thanks to the Treasure Coast Jazz Society, and being in the audience for the Marcos Flores and friends Rhapsody in Blue concert were two big highlights in a month of too many low spots.
Last weekend, I had to miss the Mike Block Trio concert at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, a fundraiser for the Mike Block String Camp scholarship fund, but I intend to make up for it April 1, when Hanneke Cassel, Mike's wife, brings her own trio to the same stage. Not familiar with Scottish fiddling? Warn your toes to expect a lot of toetapping Saturday night!
|
Extended one week:
Would a book giveaway make up for the disruption? How about Florida favorite Tim Dorsey's latest, The Maltese Iguana? Email a three-digit number to willi@willimiller.com by April 6 at 11:59 p.m. and the number closest to the randomly chosen winner without going over will be announced in next Friday's Arts Blast. The book must be claimed by the following Thursday at 11:59 p.m or it moves on to the next closest.

Those Dancin' Feet! 42nd Street Song and Dance Extravaganza
It's almost here! One of Broadway’s longest-running musicals, 42nd Street, tells the story of a humble, naïve young actress named Peggy Sawyer, who comes to the big city to audition for a new Broadway musical. Unfortunately, she arrives too late. Luckily, she catches the eye of the famous director, Julian Marsh, and he casts Peggy as a chorus girl. When the star of the show breaks her ankle on opening night, Peggy is unexpectedly pushed center stage and not only saves the show, but becomes a big star. Filled with spectacular dance routines, lavish costumes, and wonderful songs, this Tony Award-winning musical will lift your spirits and have you dancing all the way home. Music by Harry Warren, Lyrics by Al Dubin, Book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble
Backstage Access, lecture-style master class sessions, began March 30. The show runs April 11-30 on the Stark Stage at Riverside.
Hear Patrick Ryan Sullivan, who plays Julian Marsh, on Arts Blast on the Air.

Mermaids and Mosaics on St. John
Readers might know I have a personal connection to St. John, with friends who lost everything or were simply uprooted — physically and mentally — by the hurricanes of 2017.
On a small island (remember what happened in the Abacos not long after the USVI devastation) every weather event can cause a ripple that hits everyone in its path and lasts for years.
When homes and businesses are destroyed and lives lost, a playground might seem like an item that would be close to the bottom of the recovery list, but explain that to a child whose life has changed so drastically.
Cue the strong feeling of community that is so St. John. Several years ago the Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, incorporated in 1988, began working toward reopening the playground. Included in the plan was a mosaic encrusted stone wall, designed by one of the residents who lost everything in 2017, Crystal D'Abbraccio, owner of Tiny Tile Mosaics. She and her husband, Sean, had to relocate to Massachusetts, but they never lost their St. John heart. Crystal took time to answer some questions for Arts Blast.
|
The couple lived on St.John from 2012 until Irma kicked them out in 2017.
The story of how they got to St. John isn't all that unusual: "We sold our house and gave everything away to go on a family adventure. Our kids were 7 & 8 at the time. I never liked living in a rat-race society so we decided to take the leap to show our kids a different way of life." Together for 31 years, married for 21 of those, Crystal and Sean have two children, Sky, 19, and Kaden, 17. there's also a dog named Ziggy, named after Ziggy Marley.
When they arrived, her husband took a position on the faculty of Gifft Hill School and she taught dance at St. John School of the Arts, became a massage therapist at a spa, and started her company, Tiny Tile Mosaics, a web-based mosaic supply store. And then there was Mermaid Swim VI, the first mermaid swim school in the Virgin Islands, with a mermaid store in Coral Bay.
| |
The mural: "Friends of the VI National Park asked me to design, organize and execute two mosaic murals on the wall of the new children's playground in Cruz Bay. They are right next to the visitors center and measure 2x17 feet long, a total of 68 square feet." Although she was given artistic freedom, there were many things to consider, Crystal said. "What would look good in a short but very long mural, what style would be easily accomplished by community volunteers, what kind of tile is appropriate for tropical weather?" She decided to go with her favorite things in the Caribbean. "Mural #1 was a rainbow, tradewinds, sun with little butterflies. Mural #2 was an underwater scene with fish and turtles" The project was begun in February 2022 and completed this March. When the walls were up and the concrete cured, the artist began ordering supplies.
"Some I had shipped directly to STJ and some we carried in our suitcases. I really wanted this to be a community project so I contacted St John School of the Arts to help me organize groups of community volunteers. I also contacted St John VI Pottery to ask them if they could make some handmade tiles to incorporate into the project. They held workshops for the kids in Coral Bay to help make butterflies for the Sky mural and fish/turtles tiles for the ocean mural."
Meanwhile, Crystal got busy in her studio, cutting rolls of paper to scale, then transferring the design in pencil to those patterns. Using ceramic wall tile, recycled glass tile, glass gems, and handmade textured ceramics, the stages began, one step at a time, she said. "My husband and I worked from sun up to sun down for 10 days to complete it. We had volunteer groups for 6 full days; the other 4 were just my husband and I with an occasional friend here and there." The murals are here to stay. "One of the best parts of a mosaic is they don't really require any care. It will stand strong for generations to come."

At the Elliott
Highwaymen — From the Street Corner to the Smithsonian
Through July 21
In the 1950s during the Jim Crow days, several African-American self-taught artists from the Treasure Coast began painting Florida’s vivid landscapes, looking for a better way to earn a livelihood. Coined as the “Highwaymen,” they sold their art out of their car trunks as they traveled the highways, which led to their nickname. Today, Highwaymen paintings have deservedly earned a place to hang in the Smithsonian, and several Highwaymen artists are represented in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Very few of the original 26 artists remain but fortunately, many of their paintings — which are now sought after by collectors worldwide — still do.
The Elliott Museum showcased their artwork last year and we are thrilled to present an all new, premier collection of their art that includes an extensive "Canvas Board Wall" of their early works, including Harold Newton, one of the founding members, along with a Tribute Wall to Roy McLendon, who was inspired by Newton, his neighbor.
