Ending the Pilgrimage

A couple of months ago the State Chamber hosted a webinar on the topic of wearable health technology. The intersection of health and technology has always been strong, but today’s “personal tech” (smart watches, heart, or blood monitoring devices, etc.) is taking health care to incredibly new and helpful levels. I uttered an audible “wow” when ChristianaCare’s Dr. Sarah Schenck stated plainly: “the pilgrimage to the doctor’s office will be largely over in another couple of years.”

Shortly after that webinar, I attended a conference in Minneapolis and had the opportunity to visit Best Buy's headquarters to listen to CEO Corie Barry describe how Best Buy Health intends to “meet you at the intersection of health and technology.” She confirmed what Dr. Schenck described – more of our care will come remotely and from the comfort of our homes. With that care will come devices and technology that someone will need to help people like me set up, calibrate, and maintain. On their website, Best Buy Health says it is “here to help enable care and support personal connections using our world-class omnichannel capabilities, distribution and logistics, strong analytics, in-home services, and compassionate Caring Center call specialists.”

What this means for employers and employees remains to be seen. However, I am excited about this since greater personal awareness of my health condition coupled with the ability to aid my diagnosis may lead to more accurate plans and outcomes for me and my health.

ChristianaCare spins out first commercial gene editing biotechnology start-up company, CorriXR Therapeutics.

ChristianaCare announced it has spun out its first commercial biotechnology private start-up company, named CorriXR Therapeutics.

The company will use CRISPR gene editing technology to develop new, clinically relevant oncologic therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need, starting with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Its close relationship with ChristianaCare and the ChristianaCare Gene Editing Institute uniquely positions it to research and develop innovative, patient-centered therapies.

The new start-up company has been boosted with $5 million in seed financing from ChristianaCare Ventures and Brookhaven Bio. Read more >

October results from the Empire State manufacturing index are out this morning. Tuesday will bring us the NAHB home builders index for October. On Wednesday we’ll see September building permit data and housing starts. September home sales and leading economic indicators are public on Thursday, as well as the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index. We wrap up on Friday with Q3 inflation figures.

Bank of America, BNY Mellon, and Charles Schwab headline companies with earnings calls today. Netflix, Albertsons, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, and Truist Financial report on Tuesday. Tesla, Abbott Labs, Alcoa, PPG Industries, Proctor & Gamble, and Winnebago are scheduled for Wednesday. AT&T, Boston Beer, CSX, Dow, American Express, and Verizon are among those with calls later in the week.
