Drought is back in our vocabulary. 2017-2018 was the 2nd worst drought on record but when the winter of 2018-2019 hit it saved our plants. We were spared for a brief period. However, since this October the severity of drought has been on the rise. As we head into winter we will have to take extra care of our plants. This requires winter watering and deep root watering.
If the ground is dry and frozen when the snow falls, it does not hydrate the parched soil. If the soil is dry, but not frozen then go ahead and water so there is moisture in the soil (but not saturated) making water available to the roots. Plants need to go into the winter with moisture available to them as they continue to respire. Keep in mind evergreen plants like Pine and Spruce trees, tend to need more moisture because they have leaves all winter.
A dusting of snow is not very helpful as it can just evaporate. Snow that is at least 6” deep can insulate the ground and provide enough moisture when it melts.
The point is think about drought affects, where you water, why you water, and come up with a long term plan. We always have your plants in mind. Contact us to get on our will call watering list. This insures your plants are getting the moisture they need to survive these dry conditions.

Bed and Border Fertilization
|
As the year comes to an end, Autumn Tree Lawn and Landscape is preparing for Spring 2020. This means we're building your personalized Annual Proposal. Something to expect is our new service:
Bed and Border Fertilization
.
Our soils may contain excessive elements, heavy metals and toxic chemicals. Fertilizing your bed and border areas can help encourage faster, lusher growth on plants, that can be particularly helpful for vegetables, herbs, and annuals where you want to see more results quickly. What is in the
BBF
? It consists of slow to moderate release fertilizer and humates. Humates serve to buffer the effects of these substances, especially sodium, to lessen the stress effect on your crop.
Humates, which are composed of various forms of carbon, are naturally occurring material that is very rich in humified organic matter and humic substances. Humic substances encourage microbial activity in the soil, which improve overall vigor in bed and border plants.

The "After Christmas" Tree
|
After Christmas, your tree can be moved outside and redecorated for the birds. Anchor the tree in a bucket full of damp sand. Hang strings of popcorn and cranberries and add strings of peanuts (in the shell). Apples, oranges, leftover breads and cakes, even peanut butter cookies, can be hung on the boughs, but don’t use food containing chocolate, as it is poisonous to some animals. For best results, push the edible ornaments well into the tree; things that swing may scare birds.

"Plant trees, save bees."
Saving bees and trees by planting with purpose would kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Most people know that trees are good for us. They absorb carbon dioxide, thus purifying the air for our breathing pleasure. Carbon dioxide is also
one of the main greenhouse gases
, which trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to rising temperatures and climate change. NO Trees, no bees, no bugs, no food, no humans. We can do what we can, when we can, where we can by planting and caring for trees. Some great examples of trees to plant for pollinators are Lindens, Hawthorns and any flowering fruit tree just to name a few.

December is the time to landscape on paper!
When it is too cold to work in the yard, work on putting your landscape on paper; mark existing plants, site conditions (wet, dry, sunny, shade) then make a list of what you want to add OR remove. Relax and dream about next year's garden
|
|
Don't forget the house plants
When watering your houseplants, avoid using cold water because it may shock the plants; use tepid water.
Move your houseplants away from icy windows to prevent any chilling.
Check your houseplants for any insects or diseases, and treat when necessary
