Endowment Goal Update #6
In this update, we highlight another past gift from several alumni in creating an industrial engineering and management (IEM) professorship honoring former IEM School head Professor Wilson Bentley.

Bentley served OSU's engineering college for more than 23 years from 1957-1971, 14 of those years as head of the department of industrial engineering and management. Supporters credit him with influencing a generation of engineers and helped them develop their potential as pioneers of industry throughout the country.
 
"Professor Wilson Bentley had a dramatic and profound effect on the careers of many of the students he mentored," said Karl N. Reid, former dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture & Technology.  "His career advice for many was priceless.  He left an indelible impact on the field of Industrial Engineering & Management as well.  He and professor H. G. Thuesen were pioneers in the development of graduate and research programs in engineering at OSU."

The Bentley Chair is currently held by Dr. William J. Kolarik, Professor in IEM.
Wilson Bentley

Wilson J. Bentley was born in 1916 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of Arthur and Pearl Bentley. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M College, now Oklahoma State University, in 1939. He married Eva Watkins in 1943 in Algeria, North Africa. They had three children, and were living in Iowa when an infant son died in 1948. He returned to OSU as a faculty member and served for more than 23 years until his death in 1971. He was appointed as head of the School of Industrial Engineering and Management in 1957. He also served as chairman of the OSU Faculty Council from 1958 to 1959. During his time at the University, he influenced a generation of engineers and helped them develop their potential as pioneers of industry throughout the country. In honor of his dedication and tremendous impact on OSU's engineering program, the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology established the Wilson Bentley Professorship in Industrial Engineering and Management. Professor Wilson Bentley was elected mayor of Stillwater on 1970. While fishing in a creek east of the ghost town of St. Elmo, Colorado in June 1971 he drowned when a fast current pulled the hip-boot-clad Bentley about a hall mile downstream. His wife, Eva, was on the creek bank near the couple's summer cabin when her husband drowned. He was survived by his wife and two children.

Benefits of an Endowment

The $20 million endowment  being sought will greatly assist IEM in its mission to develop a diverse group of professionals and leaders in industrial engineering and management.

Many alumni and friends of IEM have demonstrated their support to the School through outright gifts of cash and appreciated securities. While these gifts are important and straightforward to make, other methods of support that may not be well known but equally important for our future, exist. There are many estate planning opportunities available through the OSU Foundation that can help transform the School and have a significant impact on its current and future students.

Proper planning can help donors and their families realize the greatest benefits from their gifts to benefit the School. This involves choosing the best combination of assets and vehicles to accomplish charitable, financial, and estate planning objectives. In addition to, or in lieu of making a cash or other outright donation, such provisions may be in the form of bequests, trusts, annuities, life insurance, retirement plans, or other means.

When realized, these gifts often are larger than the donor could ever imagine at the time of their creation. It is a wonderful way in which to create an enduring legacy for the School's benefit.
