From Classroom to Corporate: 9th Graders Explore Careers at bp

Our 9th grade students recently stepped beyond the classroom and into the real world of energy innovation during a visit to bp Headquarters. The experience provided students with a firsthand look at how global energy companies operate, collaborate, and solve complex challenges.

During the visit, students engaged with professionals, explored career pathways in energy and engineering, and gained insight into the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in STEM-related fields. Seeing industry in action helps students connect their classroom learning to real-world applications and future opportunities.

Experiences like this reinforce Energy Institute’s mission of project-based learning and industry connection, ensuring that our students are not only learning about energy, but seeing how it powers communities and careers around the world.

We are proud of our 9th graders for representing Energy Institute with professionalism and curiosity throughout the visit. The future of energy is bright, and our students are preparing to lead it.

Planting for Tomorrow: Students and Volunteers Add 25 Trees to Energy’s Landscape

Energy Institute’s campus just got a little greener. With the support of Trees For Houston and dedicated volunteers from Woodside, 25 fifteen-gallon trees were planted across our campus grounds.

This initiative was made possible through Woodside’s generous sponsorship, which not only covered the cost of the trees but also includes two years of watering and maintenance to ensure they thrive. Their investment guarantees that these trees will take root and grow alongside our students for years to come.

Students worked with community volunteers during the planting event, learning firsthand about environmental stewardship, sustainability, and the long-term impact of thoughtful partnerships. The result is more than shade and beauty. It is a living reminder of what collaboration between schools and industry can accomplish.

Thank you to Trees For Houston and Woodside for helping us plant today for a greener tomorrow.

From Rocks to Real Life: Energy Institute Students Experience Geoscience at BEG

Energy Institute students recently participated in an engaging field trip to the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG), where learning moved beyond the classroom and into real-world geoscience exploration. This year’s event brought together two schools, Westside High School and Energy Institute, with each campus sending two teams of ten students to take part in hands-on labs and team-based challenges. Energy Institute was represented by two student teams, one from Ms. McComb’s AP Environmental Science class and one from Ms. Williams’ class. Throughout the day, students worked collaboratively to examine how geoscience impacts everyday life and how the skills they are learning can be applied to solve real problems and make the world a better place.

In addition to hands-on learning, students participated in a friendly geoscience competition, earning “Geobucks” during activities and challenges. Both Energy Institute teams proudly earned Chick-fil-A and Starbucks gift cards after winning the Geoscience Jeopardy competition against Westside High School.

The experience also exposed students to potential careers in geology and the energy industry, all made possible through the support of partners and sponsors highlighted in the BEG program. The field trip was a powerful example of collaboration, applied learning, and student achievement in action.

Proof in the Paws: A Project That Matters

In the last edition of our newsletter, we shared how students took on a one-day engineering challenge to build shelters for the stray cats behind our campus. This week, that story came full circle.

For the first time, the teacher was able to capture clear proof that the project is doing exactly what it was designed to do. The photos show one of our community cats comfortably using the student-built shelter, curled up and protected. It’s a quiet but powerful moment that confirms the students’ work made a real difference.

Seeing the shelters in use brought pride and meaning to the project. What began as a three-hour design challenge turned into a lasting act of care, showing students that empathy, creativity, and problem-solving can have an immediate and visible impact.

Sometimes learning speaks loudest without words. These images say it all.

 Community Care in Action

We are grateful to share that our campus once again received a generous donation of female hygiene products from one of our substitute teachers, Ms. Angela Ford-Castille, and the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. This marks the second year in a row that they have supported our students through this meaningful act of service.

These items will provide important support for our students and reflect the power of community care and compassion. We extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Ford-Castille and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for their continued kindness, generosity, and commitment to uplifting our campus.

Please join us in celebrating and thanking them for making a difference.

 Music Club in Motion

Our Music Club continues to grow, and the progress students have made since the beginning of the school year has been inspiring to witness. From developing new skills to gaining confidence in their musical abilities, students have shown steady growth through dedication, practice, and creativity.

Mr. Duong, Music Club sponsor, shared how proud he is of the students and how meaningful it has been to watch their learning evolve over time. The club has become a space where students feel encouraged to express themselves, collaborate with peers, and let art play a central role in their growth.

As the Music Club continues to expand, it remains a powerful reminder of how the arts inspire creativity, build community, and give students a voice. We look forward to seeing where their talent and passion take them next.

Teaching with Heart and Leadership: Ms. Purtell Earns TESLA Recognition

Energy Institute High School proudly celebrates Ms. Shaunna Purtell, English teacher, as the newest recipient of the Teacher Recognition Award, known on campus as the TESLA Award. The award was passed to her by co-teacher Maria Atkerson, who highlighted Ms. Purtell’s dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to students.

Ms. Purtell joined Energy in the middle of last school year and quickly made a meaningful impact. Since arriving, her leadership has continued to grow, and her presence in the classroom has become a steady source of encouragement and growth for students.

Please join us in congratulating Ms. Purtell on this well-deserved recognition.
