Energy Students Showcase Innovation at District Luncheon

Energy Institute students recently represented the school at the Houston ISD Foundation’s annual State of the District luncheon, showcasing the kind of real-world innovation that defines the senior capstone experience.

In partnership with Moonflower Farms, a local hydroponics startup, student teams took on the challenge of improving a smart greenhouse system. Their work combined engineering, programming, and design thinking to develop a programmable camera gantry for monitoring plant growth, along with a streamlined touchscreen control panel that integrates environmental sensors into one cohesive system.

This project reflects what makes Energy unique: students are not just completing assignments, but collaborating with industry partners, designing for real clients, and solving authentic problems. The experience of working directly with a partner like Moonflower Farms provides a deeper understanding of how classroom skills translate into real-world applications.



During the event, district leadership engaged with students to learn more about their work, highlighting the impact and quality of their designs. These interactions underscore how Energy students are already contributing meaningful ideas and solutions beyond the classroom.



Looking ahead, the upcoming Senior Capstone Exhibition will offer families an opportunity to experience even more of the creativity, technical skill, and purpose-driven work students continue to produce.

Energy Seniors Earn Prestigious NROTC Scholarships

Energy Institute proudly celebrates seniors Asher Gardner and William Davis for earning a highly competitive NROTC scholarships; a remarkable achievement that reflects their dedication, leadership, and academic excellence.

The Navy ROTC scholarship provides significant support for their college journey, including tuition, a monthly stipend, funding for books, and coverage of key educational expenses. Beyond the financial award, this opportunity sets both students on a path toward service and leadership, as they will be commissioned as officers in the Navy upon completion of their college programs.

This honor represents not only personal accomplishment, but also a commitment to serving something greater. Asher and William have demonstrated the discipline, character, and perseverance that define future leaders.

Strong Start, Bright Future: Freshmen Honored at Breakfast

On March 27, Energy Institute proudly hosted the Freshman Focus Breakfast, recognizing students for their strong academic performance during the first semester of their freshman year. The event celebrated early success while setting the stage for long-term achievement.

As students enjoyed breakfast, they also engaged in a focused session centered on preparing for college and future opportunities. The discussion emphasized the importance of starting early and building a well-rounded resume by senior year. Students were encouraged to prioritize academics while also investing in extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and meaningful volunteer work.

Additional guidance included the value of tracking achievements over time and maintaining detailed records to support future college applications. For students aiming for highly competitive colleges, the AP Capstone Diploma was highlighted as a strong pathway to demonstrate academic rigor and research skills.



The Freshman Focus Breakfast served as both a celebration and a launchpad, reminding students that their journey toward college and career readiness begins now, with intentional steps and thoughtful planning. 

Students Choose Mr. Duong as Teacher of the Year

Energy Institute students have spoken, and their choice is clear. This year’s Teacher of the Year, selected by student vote, is Mr. Vuong Duong, a math teacher known for both his excellence in the classroom and his impact beyond it.

With a resounding show of support, students recognized Mr. Duong for his ability to make learning meaningful, being approachable, and being engaging. In math class, he brings clarity and consistency. Outside the classroom, he leads the highly talked-about Music Club, where students collaborate, create, and grow through shared passion.

This recognition reflects more than strong instruction. It highlights the relationships, encouragement, and sense of community that Mr. Duong builds with students every day. Whether solving equations or supporting creative expression, his influence reaches across campus in lasting ways.

Energy Institute seniors recently had the unique opportunity to attend the opening day of CERAWeek 2026, one of the world’s leading energy conferences hosted by S&P Global. Surrounded by industry leaders and global innovators, students experienced firsthand the conversations shaping the future of energy.

Throughout the event, students engaged with advanced topics such as the role of artificial intelligence in the energy sector, the growing potential of geothermal energy alongside existing oil and gas systems, and emerging developments in nuclear fusion technology. These sessions offered a rare glimpse into the complex challenges and breakthroughs driving the global energy landscape.

Experiences like this extend learning far beyond the classroom, allowing students to connect their academic work to real-world innovation at the highest level. Exposure to industry professionals and forward-thinking ideas helps prepare Energy students to step confidently into the future of Houston’s workforce and beyond.

Calvin Mark Named Houston Rockets and bp STEM Teacher of the Month

Energy Institute proudly celebrates Calvin Mark, who has been selected as the Houston Rockets bp STEM Teacher of the Month. This recognition highlights educators who spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and cultivate a lasting love for learning both inside and beyond the classroom.

The surprise celebration took place on campus, where Calvin was recognized in front of colleagues and students, with his family present to share in the moment. The Houston Rockets brought Clutch, a few Clutch City Dancers, members of the Community Relations department, and a representative from bp to celebrate. Their presence added a special layer of meaning to an already memorable occasion.

The celebration did not stop there. Calvin was also recognized at a Houston Rockets game, where his impact as an educator was highlighted on an even larger stage, a fitting tribute to the influence he has on students every day.

This honor reflects the dedication, passion, and excellence Calvin brings to STEM education, encouraging students to think critically, explore boldly, and see themselves as future innovators.

Energy Institute students recently attended the NACAC National College Fair in Houston, an event that brings together colleges and universities from across the country and around the world. The fair provided students with direct access to admissions representatives, giving them the opportunity to explore a wide range of postsecondary options all in one place.

Throughout the event, students engaged in meaningful conversations with college representatives, asked questions about admissions requirements, academic programs, and campus life, and began building connections that will support their future college journeys. For many, it was a valuable step in turning college exploration into a more concrete and informed process.



Experiences like the NACAC College Fair help students broaden their perspective, compare opportunities, and gain confidence as they begin planning for life after high school. By stepping into spaces like this, Energy students continue to take ownership of their future, one conversation at a time. 

Mr. Moreno Honored with TESLA Teacher Award

Energy Institute proudly recognizes Mr. Gabriel Moreno as a recipient of the TESLA Teacher Award, an honor that highlights exceptional dedication, leadership, and impact on campus.

Nominated by a campus leader, Mr. Moreno has truly stepped up this year, taking on the role of cohort lead and guiding his team to strong, meaningful work in the classroom. His leadership has helped foster collaboration, consistency, and a clear focus on student success.

In addition to his leadership, one of Mr. Moreno’s instructional strategies was recently featured during a SPARK meeting, allowing colleagues across campus to learn from and implement his effective practices. His influence is not only felt within his cohort, but across the broader instructional community.

Beyond academics, Mr. Moreno serves as the sponsor of the Mental Health Club, where he has played a key role in raising awareness and supporting student well-being. His commitment to both academic excellence and student support reflects the heart of what it means to be an Energy educator.
