Cohort 1 Project

PBL 2 Driving question: β€œHow can we as investigators analyze the impact of food waste and propose solutions to improve waste utilization?”

Students have been WASTE-ing no time learning about food waste for PBL 2! In English class. students have been introduced to APA citations and databases; their summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting skills have all been in preparation for their research paper! In Engineering they are learning about Aerobic and Anaerobic compost and the design of Compost bioreactor, also been learning about 3D Software- Fusion 360. In Biology they have been learning about Biogeochemical Cycles and their importance to keep a balanced ecosystem; they also have been learning how cells can perform different processes to survive. In World Geography, they have just been assigned their cities and will begin working on their photo essay deliverable soon. Ask them about their city when you get a chance!

Cohort 2 Project

Cohort 2 is embarking on a new project for the Spring semester! Our driving question "How can we design a 3D accessibility device that effectively addresses the real-world challenges faced by individuals with chromosomal abnormalities?" Students will also be reading the memoir We Should Hang Out Sometime by Josh Sundquist. At the same time, we will be learning about disability rights law around the world. For our project launch students were asked to work in scenarios that mimic the real-world challenges faced by people with disabilities.

Cohort 3 Project

Driving Questions: How can we as engineers ensure access to energy despite extenuating circumstances?

Students will be developing their own problem statement to research and propose possible social and engineering solutions for. These problem statements will address an issue that creates an inequal access to energy resources. Possible scenarios include isolated geographic locations or natural disasters.

We are looking for guest speakers and field trip opportunities. We are looking for speakers who have experience with electricity, community activism, movement of resources, responding/recovering from natural disasters or any other thing that relates to the driving question.

Cohort 4 Project

Howdy everyone! Cohort 4 will address "How can we as Industrial Tycoons build factories that out-produce our global competitors to RULE the World?" Students will discover the Industrial Revolution, hydraulics, pneumatics, circuits, electricity, robotics, programming, Work/Power/Energy, and Assembly Lines/Rube-Goldberg machines. The objective is for Students is to apply knowledge of the Industrial Revolution from their World History class and in their Engineering class. Drawing inspiration from historical representation and technology, students roleplay as Factory Tycoons to move objects a known distance, both horizontal and vertical, that outperforms competitors.

Cohort 5 Project

  • Title: Waking the Waterbender Within
  • Overview: Cohort 5 students will be tasked with designing, building, researching, analyzing, and testing a man-made or natural water remediation system to remove assigned contaminants. Throughout their classes, students will argue the feasibility of the different remediation systems and how contaminants affect human health. Given a contaminant (Nitrates, Phosphate, pH, heavy metals, and Chloride), each class period will remediate a water sample from a city in the United States of America in the most feasible manner to present their findings at an Exhibition in March.
  • Driving Question: How can we, as engineers, research, justify, and design a feasible man-made or natural water remediation system for one of five principle contaminants as chemists in a water sample based on the history of the United States of America?
