In Loving Memory

Katie Davis, Class of 2021

Kate Fowler, Class of 2022

Vanessa Baeza, Class of 2023

This winter break, the Energy community lost three well-loved young ladies. Today our Energy family gathered to remember Katie, Kate, and Vanessa. Students, teachers, and administrators shared loving memories about the students, the Pom Squad performed a dance dedicated to Vanessa (one of the founders), and everyone held candles for a moment of silence. All three of these young ladies had a profound impact on Energy. Katie was involved in Debate, Young Democrats, the Make It Work Club, and more. She worked to create a community that supports neurodiversity and made it her mission to make the world a better and kinder place. Katie was in her second year at Trinity University. Kate was involved in National Hispanic Society Debate and NHS, participated in a variety of summer programs like Rice University's Neuroscience Camp, and volunteered with several organizations. Kate was funny, hard-working, and loved animals. Kate was in her freshman year at Texas Lutheran University. Vanessa was a current senior at Energy. She was the founder of Pom Squad, had an internship at Marathon Oil, and was very involved with service projects through NHS, as well as many other activities. Vanessa is known for her bright and welcoming personality. Vanessa knew no strangers. All three of these young ladies will be missed by our community.

Revised Cell Phone Policy - Reminder

At Energy Institute, high quality learning experiences are a top priority. Energy will be implementing a new cell phone policy to optimize learning practices for all. Beginning January 9, 2023 students will be required to:

  • Keep their cell phones/smart watches in their backpacks while in class.
  • Keep their cell phones/smart watches in their backpacks while using the restroom.
  • Use their cell phones/smart watches only during passing periods and/or lunch.
  • Use an office or classroom phone during the day if the student needs to contact the parent.

Energy is asking for the parents' support by:

  • Calling the school at 713-802-4620 if there is an emergent need to contact your child.
  • Refrain from texting your child during class time or at least know you child will check their messages during passing periods and/or lunch.
  • Understanding this decision was made with your child's best learning interest at heart.
  • Remembering your child's cell phone is still close by in their backpack if there is a concern for you child's safety.

Updated Dismissal - Reminder

Due to the two days Houston ISD was closed for the water boil notice in November, Energy Institute will need to adjust our dismissal time to 3:11 PM. This allows us to maintain the required number of yearly minutes. The new dismissal time begins January 9, 2023.

Five minutes will be added to the first period of the day and one minute will be added to the last minute of the day.

Dual credit registration has opened up for Summer 2023 for current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students. The registration form will be open from December 16th – February 3, 2023. Please visit www.tinyurl.com/dualcreditenergy to obtain more information about the program. You can access the registration form on the website or you can go directly to it at tinyurl.com/energydualcredit2023. If you have questions about dual credit, please email Mrs. Garcia, [email protected].

Spread the Word about Energy Institute!

Do you know any families interested in learning more about what Energy has to offer? There are several events coming up that we'd love for you to share with families you know who are interested in Energy Institute! This year is the first year we are back to normal Magnet recruiting since Covid. Energy has hit the group running with activity! In October we held our first annual Fall Middle School Design Challenge. Students from all over Houston ISD participated in the Float Your Boat and Punkin' Chunkin' Challenges. The winning group was $25 Amazon Gift Cards. Ms. Alexander, our Magnet Coordinator, has visited 33 middle schools in the last few weeks recruiting new students. Our PTO has held numerous parent coffees to allow prospective parents a chance to ask questions in a casual environment. We have officially started weekly Magnet Tours on Thursdays at 1:00 PM. Also, each Tuesday night Ms. Alexander also has a standing TEAMS meeting from 6:00 - 7:00 PM for prospective parents and students. Student ambassadors are on the call as well to talk about PBL and Energy Institute. Below is the flyer weekly Teams Meetings.

Although the online informational meeting has passed, you can use the flyer above for information on how to nominate a student for testing and for information on who to contact with questions.

Cohort News & More

Cohort 6 Entry Event

Cohort 6 launched their next project this week. The project includes English III, US History, Chemistry, and Environmental Sustainability. The driving question is, "How can we as historians depict historical American food insecurity problems from the past that were solved by modern food technology in America?" For the project launch students acted out The Grapes of Wrath, which hinted to the final product, when students will be writing and producing one act plays. We can't wait to see what the students create!
