Thank a Staff Member!
As we approach Thanksgiving, we encourage our community to express thanks to our Energy IHS family. Submit a thank you note here and we will print it on decorative paper and deliver it to the staff member the week before Thanksgiving. Submissions are due on Friday, November 11th.

Exhibition is Wednesday
All freshmen, sophomores, and juniors should make plans to stay after school on Wednesday for our first Exhibition of the year! We invite our parents and the community to come and view the projects students have been hard at work on! Students should be dressed based on cohort requirements (usually professional dress, but check with the cohort) and plan on being at school until 7:15 PM. The exhibition runs from 5:00 - 7:00 PM and there is required clean-up time afterwards. Students will be given the option to sign-up to purchase Chick-fil-a to eat before the exhibition. Students can also bring snacks and extra food or wait until they get home for dinner. Food delivery is not allowed. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's cohort teachers or dean. We can't wait to see you all Wednesday night!

It's Time for the Energy Day of Service!
It's time for the Fall Day of Service! Students can volunteer to clean up the campus in the morning or lead STEM activities with elementary school children in the afternoon. Earn service hours, help your community, and have fun with your classmates! See Ms. De La Rosa with any questions and sign-up using the QR Code or url below.

Spread the Word!
Do you know any families interested in learning more about what Energy has to offer? There are several events coming up that we'd love for you to share with families you know who are interested in Energy Institute! This year is the first year we are back to normal Magnet recruiting since Covid. Energy has hit the group running with activity! In October we held our first annual Fall Middle School Design Challenge. Students from all over Houston ISD participated in the Float Your Boat and Punkin' Chunkin' Challenges. The winning group was $25 Amazon Gift Cards. Ms. Alexander, our Magnet Coordinator, has visited 33 middle schools in the last few weeks recruiting new students. Although we have given over 20 tours so far this year, we are officially starting weekly Thursday Magnet Tours on Thursday, November 17th. The tours will be at 1:00 PM. Each Tuesday night Ms. Alexander also has a standing TEAMS meeting from 6:00 - 7:00 PM for prospective parents and students. Student ambassadors are on the call as well to talk about PBL and Energy Institute. Next Wednesday, prospective families are also able to come visit us during Exhibition on November 9 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. We also have PTO Parent Coffee Meet-ups for incoming parents to mix and mingle with current parents. Below are flyers for the coffee meet-ups and the weekly Teams Meetings.

Covid-19 Testing Is Back
HISD and Fulgent Genetics have partnered again this year for free On-site Covid-19 testing. Free Covid-19 testing will occur during lunch on November 9th, 30th and December 14th. If you would like your child to test, parents must complete the consent form at www.houstonisd.org/COVIDtesting. Students will be reminded during the morning announcements to come to the testing site at lunch time on the day of testing. There will not be individual notices or personal reminders to come test. Please have your child set an alarm or appointment date on their phone or computer. Results will be sent to families directly.

Student Opportunity: The Energy Project
Interested in Innovating for Alternative Energy Solutions locally and globally?
Be part of the solution and sign up for The Energy Project. An opportunity for youth to lead the Energy Transition in Houston. Students get to work with a Stanford Professor to learn design thinking, Rice University MBA and WOM Engineering mentors assisting student projects, TXRX labs to build a working prototype and Junior Achievement to inspire and develop student business plans and pitches. The winning group will receive $15,000 to bring their ideas to market and an opportunity to travel to India in the summer to implement their projects and work with an under-resourced community school in India.

Calling All Athletes
If you play a sport at your zoned campus, please complete the Sports Participation Notification Form. The form must be completed for each sport at least two weeks prior to your first competition. The form allows us to approve early releases for games and verify your grades to keep you UIL eligible. There is more information on the form. Please see Ms. Garcia with any questions.

Senior Government
Over the last seven weeks, Energy seniors participated in a simulation of a presidential election. At the start, four campaign teams announced their candidacy for president, two Republicans and two Democrats. These campaigns battled it out in a primary debate hosted by teams of students representing conservative and liberal interest groups. Facing intense scrutiny from student reporters representing five different media organizations, one Democrat and one Republican secured the nomination from their respective political party groups. The candidates faced off in a general debate hosted by the media groups before competing over a handful of swing states. With a flurry of advertisements from the interest groups focused on just a couple of crucial swing states, each class elected a President of the United States.

Cohort 6 Filter Testing
Students in Cohort 6 have been studying water quality as part of their current project. The students designed and built three different filters to test. Then, the students determined which filter worked best at filtering out specific chemical compounds that make drinking water dangerous before building their final filter for next week's exhibition.

In Engineering, students have been studying angles, vectors, and individual forces. Students built tresses and then testing them. Although they were being tested up to 65 pounds, some bridges withheld even more - like a group members entire weight! | |
In English, students have been writing narratives and preparing them to share with their whole cohort in a live storytelling extravaganza. In this photo, students are practicing their delivery one on one to build confidence to move to progressively larger groups. | |

Early Applications Numbers are in!
Congratulations to our seniors! They have been hard at work completing college applications. 65% of the seniors submitted an application by the first Early Action/Early Decision deadline of November 1st. This is a fantastic number and will continue to grow with the December 1st deadline coming up. College acceptances and scholarship notifications are starting to arrive! Seniors - don't forget to follow up with you deans and share the good news! Any student who needs help with their applications should see their dean or Ms. Cortinas in the College Room.

Senior dues cover graduation ceremony costs, a professional graduation photo on stage, the yearbook, a graduation cap and gown, the diploma cover, a senior class panoramic picture, senior t-shirt, senior breakfast, prom, senior picnic (or other fun selected activity), and more senior week activities.
The Early Bird time period has expired. Students should pay their senior dues before prices increase again. Senior students should see their dean if there are any economic concerns and make sure they have completed the Socioeconomic Form. Visit our website for more information.

Purchase Your Energy Polo Today
Energy has three modes of dress. Energy students are required to wear a blue Energy polo for field trips, certain guest speakers, and special events. These are purchased through our PTO store and can be picked up by students at the PTO office (in the B building) on Wednesdays during lunch. Shirts are $25. As special field trips and events are starting up, it's important that anyone who does not already have one, gets one purchased. Visit the PTO store to purchase yours today. All students should have one purchased by the end of September.
