Pick-up/Drop-off Procedures

We continue to be thankful for our families who are following drop-off and pick-up procedures. The overwhelming majority of our drivers are. We are still struggling with a handful of cars that need to pull all the way up. Please don't leave gaps. We also continue to ask that you do not drop your child off in unauthorized areas such as the left lane of the drive and on major streets. Be kind and let's keep our students and staff safe.

Ambassador Applications Due September 6

Calling all Energy Student Leaders! We are looking for our next group of Energy Ambassadors. Applicants should be students who are ready to share their love of Energy with future Energy students and parents as well as industry leaders. Students will also be asked to volunteer at special events and serve on special panels. This is a great leadership and volunteer activity for students who are comfortable speaking to new faces about their projects and life at Energy.

Clutch City Connect Makes Ties with Energy Interns

Energy Institute welcomed Clutch City Connect on campus this week where they hosted a special workshop for our student interns. Students were taught proper professional dress techniques and got to practice tying a tie. Students in need of professional attire were also gifted with suits, dress shirts, and slacks to take home.

Thank you to Clutch City Connect for your dedication to our students and making sure they are prepared for these next steps.

Cohort News & More

Sophomore Cohort Highlights

Cohort 3

Cohort 3 began their school year with a variety of team activities! Students played “people bingo” to meet their cohort fellows, designed a personalized “Funko Pop” character (complete with biography), created germinating “seed paper,” and worked in groups to construct and test a floatable boat design given the constraints of time, cost-effectiveness, and overall efficiency. This week, we’ve gotten down to business to work on “Unit 0” activities in individual cohort contents. This will prepare us to launch our first project soon! We can’t wait to see what transformations our students accomplish this year.

Cohort 4

Cohort 4 recently launched their first project "Are We There Yet?" After a series of entry events the students learned their driving question is, "How can we, as city planners, solve a logistical issue by applying historical solutions and engineering knowledge to bypass obstacles." The students will compare the city planning of ancient societies and modern day Houston in their World History and English classes in order to identify a particular problem regarding a perennial logistical issue (specifically in Houston). Students will use inspiration from a specific ancient city to engineer a route that includes a bridge to resolve the selected logistical issue in their Physics and Engineering classes. We look forward to seeing what these city planners engineer.

Senior News and Information

Senior Dues

It is time to start thinking about senior dues. Senior dues cover graduation ceremony costs, a professional graduation photo on stage, the yearbook, a graduation cap and gown, the diploma cover, a senior class panoramic picture, senior t-shirt, senior breakfast, prom, senior picnic (or other fun selected activity), and more senior week activities.

For the lowest cost, pay during the Early Bird pricing! Seniors should see their dean if there are any economic concerns and make sure they have completed the Socioeconomic Form. Visit our website for more information.

Featured Staff Member

Staff Highlight: Ms. Cortinas

We are excited to welcome back Ms. Cortinas, our College and Career Readiness Advisor. Her passion for College and Career readiness is undeniable and she is so excited to get started and help as many students as she possibly can!

Education: Bachelor of Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Houston- Main Campus

Background: Ms. Cortinas was born and raised here in Houston, Texas and has been assisting students with college readiness since she graduated college in December of 2019.

Hobbies: Yoga, going to farmers markets, estate sale shopping, thrifting, decorating her apartment, and playing with her dogs.

At Energy: Ms. Cortinas is available to help students from all grade levels as they contemplate and plan for their future after high school. However, her day-to-day tasks involve helping senior students find best fits for college, complete college applications, apply for financial aid, find scholarships, as well as with matriculation tasks such as logging in to college portals, accepting and comparing financial aid packages, etc.

Applying to colleges and financial aid can be very overwhelming and time consuming so her goal is to provide students with the resources and tools that they will need to be successful while still holding students accountable in preparation for the independence and autonomy they will experience after graduation.

Her resource page is updated daily with new opportunities and quick links to important webpages. For parents that may have questions, please email her at emily.cortinas@houstonisd.org

PTO News

New PTO President - David Heikkinen

I'm happy to serve as your incoming PTO President. Two of my three kids are sophomores at EIHS and I love what the teachers and staff have accomplished at the Energy Institute High School. My hope is that the PTO can expand membership, engage with all our parents, and have a ton of fun in our first post-COVID full school year. We have a great slate of PTO volunteers that I am looking forward to working with. We do hope to do more in-person meetings and activities as we get back to normal. Stayed tuned for the first meeting date!
