Remembering Jane Lange

On June 6, 2022, Energy Institute and the world lost Jane Lange, one of our bright lights, to Leukemia. Jane was a beautiful soul who was kind, loving, artistic, and passionate about learning. Even while she was sick, she still wanted to keep learning as much as possible. Jane was part of the Class of 2023 and will be missed.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we would like to honor Jane's memory by collecting money and making a group donation to B.I.G. Love Cancer Care. This is an organization that was near and dear to Jane's heart and helped make her inpatient time brighter.

If you would like to participate, you can send a donation via Paypal (@NoelleMacGregor), Venmo (@Noelle-MacGregor), or drop off cash at school in an envelope. If you donate electronically, please write in the notes "In Memory of Jane." If you donate in cash, please label the envelope "In Memory of Jane." We will be accepting donations for one more week until Friday, September 30th.

Open House

It was so great to see our families back on campus for this year's Open House. We hope everyone was able to get a feel for Energy and your child's teachers and classes.

If you attended Open House and were unable to sign-in, please sign in here.

We'd love to get your feedback if you attended Open House. Please complete the appropriate survey below:

JFK Field Trip

Almost sixty years ago, John F. Kennedy gave his “We go to the Moon” speech at Rice University Stadium. Sixty Energy students and thousands of others from HISD made their way to Rice on Monday, September 12th, to commemorate that speech and live in a moment of history.

The students were also able to network with representatives from Rice and NASA as they walked through the exhibit portion of the day and were astounded! The student body here at Energy is filled with innovative and brilliant minds who can one day be a part of the next big discovery or adventure, and who knows, in sixty years, we could be celebrating them. How exciting!

Blood Drive Exceeds Goal

Energy Institute students and staff donated blood last week at this semester's blood drive sponsored by NHS. Energy exceeded the goal of donating 50 units of blood by collecting 66 units! We had 44 first time donors! Thank you to Ms. De La Rosa and NHS for running the blood driving and providing our school with the chance to give back.

Middle School Design Challenge

All 7th and 8th grade students are invited for a morning of engineering fun on October 15th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Students will work in teams to complete a design challenge. Sign up at www.tinyurl.com/EnergyMSChallenge. We encourage our families to share this with anyone who might be interested in engineering or Energy Institute High School.

Social Media and OTC Medicine Warnings

The Food and Drug Administration released a warning of a new social media trend geared towards children involving nonprescription medication. The link below will discuss the dangers of social media challenges with drugs, what you can do to protect your children, and, lastly, using OTC drugs safely.

A Recipe for Danger: Social Media Challenges Involving Medicines

We encourage you to read the article and discuss it with your children.

Calling All Athletes

If you play a sport at your zoned campus, please complete the Sports Participation Notification Form. The form must be completed for each sport at least two weeks prior to your first competition. The form allows us to approve early releases for games and verify your grades to keep you UIL eligible. There is more information on the form. Please see Ms. Garcia with any questions.

Weekly Highlights

Principles of Manufacturing

All freshmen take Principles of Manufacturing (POM) in order to learn design and build skills that will give them a solid foundation for engineering and their projects throughout their time here at Energy. If your freshman is in health this semester, they will switch to POM next semester. Transfer students also take this course and there is even a second level of the class for students who really enjoy designing and building.

Recently, students in POM have been learning how to use CAD and the laser cutter. Students were able to design and laser cut custom key chains. Look closely at in the photo at Johnathan Mendoza's detailed design work!

We look forward to seeing what else the students make this year!

AP Psychology

AP Psychology students are studying the impact of the nervous system on human behavior. To simulate neural transmission, students drew and labeled neurons using chalk.

Staff and Student Recognition

Teacher of the Month Voting Now Open

It's time for students to select our first Teacher of the Month! Votes for September Teacher of the Month will be accepted until Wednesday, September 28th. Students can vote at www.tinyurl.com/EnergyTOM. We will announce the Teacher of the Month in the next newsletter. The winner will be able to park at the front of the school for the month of October.

Mr. Tesla Awarded to Mr. Hernandez

Each week one staff member is honored by another staff member for their contributions to Energy. The selected staff member gets to hang out with Mr. Tesla for the week and select the next recipient.

Last week's recipient, Mr. Molina, has selected Mr. Hernandez as this week's Tesla Winner! Mr. Hernandez teaches Chemistry in Cohort 6 and Forensic Science as well. He also sponsors the First Robotics Team.

Mr. Molina said that Mr. Hernandez has really stood out to his students. One student told Mr. Molina, "He really explains it until you get it. Also, he makes it fun at the same time."

Congratulations Mr. Hernandez!

National Merit Commended Students

We are proud to announce that Energy had four students named National Merit Commended Students! These students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on PSAT. Two of the four students were one point away from being a National Merit Semi-finalist. Congratulations to Shaan Desai, Magnolia Hickey, and Elijah Hickey.

Congratulations Ambassadors!

We are excited to announce our Student Ambassador Team. This year we had an unprecedented number of applications and it was very tough to make selections. These students will serve the school by helping with Magnet events for prospective students, campus tours, student panels, and other special events.
