Cohort 3 Crash Course
As an introduction to Cohort 3’s first PBL, “Crash Course,” students were tasked with creating a safety net or device for a water balloon to fall from a height of approximately 6 meters. Students were provided with constraints and materials (no adhesives were allowed in the design structure) and given time to brainstorm, sketch, and build their final design. Teams enjoyed between a 60-80% success rate, and the winners for best design received a prize! Students were then introduced to the Driving Question – “How do we, as engineers, create and design a safety prototype to protect the people we care about from everyday collisions?” – and collaborated with their new group members to design norms for working together and roles to fulfill throughout the course of the project.

Thank You PTO
Earlier this week the Energy PTO surprised our staff by cruising around campus to every office and every classroom with drinks and treats. Each staff member was given a bag to fill and thanked for "ensuring our students soar." Everyone appreciated this fun and kind gesture. Thank you to all of the families who contributed snacks and drinks for the staff!

PSAT Testing
On Monday, October 9th all freshman students will sit for the PSAT. On Tuesday, October 10th, all sophomores and juniors will sit for the PSAT. This year the PSAT is switching to a digital format. It will be very important that students have their laptops fully charged for testing day. Now is the time for students to get assistance if they are having any technical issues. Students can learn about the new digital PSAT and look at sample questions on the College Board website.

Cohort 1 Field Trip and Chaperone Request
Cohort 1 is gearing up for a field trip experience on Tuesday, October 10th. Students will be going to Armand Bayou Nature Center to explore the bayou ecosystem and engage in activities aligned to their current project, Project Survival.
Field trip forms are going home today with students. Make sure they submit their completed Parent Form and fill out the Lunch Form, if they would like lunch provided by the school. We are also asking students to contribute $20 for their admission to the Nature Center, however we can fund any students who are not able to make the payment.
As our dress code states, students should wear their Blue Energy Polo. If your child does not have their Energy polo yet, please order it here as soon as possible. We are also asking students to bring the following items: tennis shoes, water, sunscreen, hat and bug repellant to ensure their comfort on the trip.

We are also looking for Cohort 1 parents who are interested in chaperoning our field trip! Chaperones will help ensure student safety and get to experience the trip with the students. Chaperones will need to be on campus at 7:45AM and they can ride with students to the bayou center. Chaperones should bring the same supplies as students. There is no cost for chaperones to attend. | | |

Club Fair Success
Last week Energy clubs kicked off their year with Club Fair. All students had an opportunity to visit club tables during Enrichment to learn about the opportunities at Energy and sign up for clubs. We highly recommend all students sign up for at least one club! You can find a complete list on the website under Student Resources.

NASA High School Aerospace Scholars Program Accepting Applications
Texas High School Aerospace Scholars is an authentic STEM learning experience for Texas high school juniors to engage with NASA’s missions and become the next generation of explorers. HAS is a year-long commitment for Texas high school juniors which starts in the fall with a four-month online learning experience related to space exploration, Earth science, technology, and aeronautics. Highest achieving students receive an invitation to a five-day gamified virtual summer experience (Moonshot) mentored by NASA scientists and engineers. Energy has had many students participate and enjoy this program. If you have any interest in aerospace, which highly encourage you to apply.

Last week Ms. De La Rosa chose Ms. Thomas for the Tesla Award! She said "Mr. Tesla is going to a mentor, a coach, an advocate, and an organizer. In one year, she has emerged into the great leader that she always was as a new Cohort Lead. She has also taken on leadership with two of the largest and most active clubs at Energy: she co-sponsors the Gender-Sexuality Alliance and co-Advises the National Honor Society with me, bringing the structure that our organization has missed for years. Her advocacy for our students, especially those who have the highest needs, is intentional. She is present, kind, compassionate, and goal driven. She makes students accountable and follows through. To my fellow leader and my hero, I present Mr. Tesla to Ms. Jocelyn Thomas."

This week Ms. Thomas chose Ms. Nam for the Tesla Award! She said, "Nam is an amazing leader of the Math team at energy. She is a fierce advocate for her students and teachers. She pushes not only for rigorous academics but generally has high expectations for her students. As a fellow teacher leader, I appreciate her commitment to greatness because when she pushes (or coaches her team on how to push) our students—the results are phenomenal. Beyond her contributions as a content coach and classroom teacher—Nam encourages our students through the Powerlifting Club. That's why I say that she is always... lifting expectations!"

Senior Dues
It's time to pay senior dues. Senior dues covered the costs associated with the graduation ceremony, a professional graduation photo, yearbook, cap and gown, diploma cover, senior panoramic picture, senior events, senior t-shirt, senior breakfast, prom (senior's ticket), and senior week activities. If the senior class decides to add in additional events, those may incur additional costs.
