Remembering Jane Lange

On June 6, 2022, Energy Institute and the world lost Jane Lange, one of our bright lights, to Leukemia. Jane was a beautiful soul who was kind, loving, artistic, and passionate about learning. Even while she was sick, she still wanted to keep learning as much as possible. Jane was part of the Class of 2023 and will be missed.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we would like to honor Jane's memory by collecting money and making a group donation to B.I.G. Love Cancer Care. This is an organization that was near and dear to Jane's heart and helped make her inpatient time brighter.

If you would like to participate, you can send a donation via Paypal (@NoelleMacGregor), Venmo (@Noelle-MacGregor), or drop off cash at school in an envelope. If you donate electronically, please write in the notes "In Memory of Jane." If you donate in cash, please label the envelope "In Memory of Jane." Today is the last day to donate.

Club Fair

On Wednesday during lunch, students were able to preview the various clubs available on campus! Energy student leaders did a great job marketing their clubs to fellow students. The complete list of clubs is available on the Energy club page. On that page you can also find directions on how to start a club. Any student can start a club! We encourage parents to ask their children which clubs they signed up for at Club Fair. Most clubs meet during lunch and a few meet after school. It's a great way to make new friends, build a resume, develop leadership, and have fun!

Middle School Design Challenge

All 7th and 8th grade students are invited for a morning of engineering fun on October 15th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Students will work in teams to complete a design challenge. Sign up at www.tinyurl.com/EnergyMSChallenge. We encourage our families to share this with anyone who might be interested in engineering or Energy Institute High School.

Calling All Athletes

If you play a sport at your zoned campus, please complete the Sports Participation Notification Form. The form must be completed for each sport at least two weeks prior to your first competition. The form allows us to approve early releases for games and verify your grades to keep you UIL eligible. There is more information on the form. Please see Ms. Garcia with any questions.

Weekly Highlights

Pre-Calculus

On Tuesday, September 27, the Pre-Calculus class had the honor of having Sanjna Bharadwaj, a filmmaker, speak to our students! Bharadwaj has worked for Pixar, Netflix, and is currently working with BentoBox to create an animated series. She has created many short films! She talked about her creative process to students as they are in the creative process in their projects to create short stories. The class's current driving question is, How can we, as animators and mathematicians, use equations of various functions to tell a story?

Students are creating an object of their choice and will be grouped together with similar objects to create a short story. Students are using parent functions and translating them on Desmos to create their object.

We look forward to seeing their math projects come alive during this project.

Staff and Student Recognition

Teacher of the Month

Mr. Tesla Awarded to Mr. McNinch

Each week one staff member is honored by another staff member for their contributions to Energy. The selected staff member gets to hang out with Mr. Tesla for the week and select the next recipient.

Last week's recipient, Mr. Hernandez, has selected Mr. McNinch as this week's Tesla Winner! He teaches Engineering Science in Cohort 4 and AP Environmental Science as well. He also sponsors the First Robotics Team.

Mr. Hernandez said that Mr. McNinch is a great team player. He is a caring person who is a great leader in FRC and his cohort. "Mr. McNinch has created an environment where everyone is safe and learning practical skills."

Congratulations Mr. McNinch!
