Year-End Newsletter

Dear Clean Coalition friends,

As the Clean Coalition approaches its 17-year anniversary, I am happy to recall that CLEAN is an acronym for Clean Local Energy Accessible Now -- and I am encouraged that CLEAN is increasingly recognized as the only energy solution that can optimize the trifecta of economic, environmental, and resilience benefits.

The items in this newsletter highlight how CLEAN is necessary to play a winning game of Energy Tetris, because baseload energy requires massive levels of overinvestment in exorbitantly expensive transmission infrastructure. Importantly, this reality is increasingly understood in the policy realm with leaders like Tom Steyer, the potential coming Governor of California, clearly reflecting that the old paradigm of wasteful central baseload energy needs to be replaced with clean local energy approaches.

Additionally, as data centers, EV Charging Infrastructure (EVCI), and overall electrification drive major new loads, industry players and policymakers alike are recognizing that CLEAN is necessary to provide the speed-to-power and cost-effectiveness that is required for energizing new-age societies.

The Clean Coalition will continue accelerating the transition to the CLEAN future, and in addition to the items in this newsletter, there will be much more news coming over the course of 2026, including on the numerous solar-driven Community Microgrids that the Clean Coalition is facilitating across the United States to deliver an unparalleled trifecta of economic, environmental, and resilience benefits to communities and facilities everywhere.

I hope to have opportunities to collaborate with you along the way, and to potentially see you at upcoming events, like the upcoming Intersolar Energy Storage North America (IESNA) conference in San Diego, at which the Clean Coalition will be conducting a session on Energy Tetris.

Energy Tetris

To fully conquer the energy demand ramp and meet clean-energy goals affordably, California needs to play Energy Tetris — a coordinated mix of demand-side control and supply-side management that makes the most of our existing grid — at both the transmission and distribution levels. Transitioning to an integrated grid planning process that embraces Energy Tetris will promote an energy future that is affordable, cleaner, and more resilient.

Flattening the Duck

This article explores the challenges posed by California's "duck curve." Local solar and battery storage offer a transformative solution by reducing total demand on the distribution grid, cutting peak demand, and minimizing the need for costly transmission infrastructure. Expanding battery capacity enhances these benefits by storing energy for high-demand periods, stabilizing the grid, reducing emissions, and advancing a sustainable, resilient, and equitable energy future.

Energy Central's Power Perspectives: How to un-duck the grid

In this episode of Power Perspectives, host Kinsey Grant Baker welcomes Craig Lewis, Founder and Executive Director of the Clean Coalition, to explore how local solar and storage can flatten the duck curve, cut costs, and build a more resilient grid.

Webinar: Unleashing the Community Microgrid market segment, from Ann Arbor to California to Hawaii

This webinar explored how Community Microgrids are revolutionizing energy resilience and sustainability across diverse regions, from Ann Arbor to California and Hawaii. This webinar showcased real-world examples of how communities are overcoming barriers to deploy Community Microgrid solutions that deliver unparalleled economic, environmental, and resilience benefits.

Local Energy Storage delivers unparalleled economic, environmental, and resilience benefits – Goleta leads the way

Craig Lewis of the Clean Coalition presented on a major advancement in regional energy resilience: Greenbark, a new utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) being developed by Scale Microgrids.
