Dear friends,
As we close 2024 and welcome 2025, I am humbled by the fact that the Clean Coalition's vision for a renewables-driven future is making huge strides. If I were to summarize 2024 into a single theme, it would be about Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and how they are enabling the renewables-driven future. This is true from residential-scale to grid-scale, with commercial-scale and community-scale BESS deployments thriving in between. This newsletter is stacked with examples of how BESS are helping to realize the Clean Coalition's mission for accelerating the transition to renewable energy and a modern grid -- and how the Clean Coalition is helping to facilitate BESS and providing education around BESS Pros & Cons.
While 2025 will continue to be shaped by BESS, I anticipate that it will largely be in the form of renewables-driven Microgrids. Importantly, the Clean Coalition is driving such microgrids, including via Solar Microgrids that serve individual facilities and via Community Microgrids that provide resilience to targeted grid areas. I am proud to announce that the Clean Coalition has formally submitted five Community Microgrid proposals, in partnership with PG&E and SCE, with full anticipation that the Clean Coalition will have exciting updates over the coming year.
In the meantime, I speak for the entire Clean Coalition team when I say that we send lots of positive energy!!!

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are essential for integrating renewable energy into modern grids. They store energy during periods of surplus and release it during peak demand, providing a reliable supply of clean energy. California has rapidly expanded its BESS capacity from 500 MW in 2018 to over 10,300 MW by 2024, with a projected need of 52,000 MW by 2045. This article examines the advantages and challenges of BESS, showcasing their critical role in meeting energy goals.
This article explores the challenges posed by California's "duck curve." Local solar and battery storage offer a transformative solution by reducing total demand on the distribution grid, cutting peak demand, and minimizing the need for costly transmission infrastructure. Expanding battery capacity enhances these benefits by storing energy for high-demand periods, stabilizing the grid, reducing emissions, and advancing a sustainable, resilient, and equitable energy future.
Ensuring Community Benefits | This article examines how Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs) address opposition to renewable energy projects. These agreements, involving local governments or organizations, outline benefits in exchange for support. Benchmarking CBAs against project capacity helps align benefits with economics, offering planners and communities a valuable tool.
Incentives are Proliferating
Clean Coalition promotes two incentives for Central Coast residents: 3CE’s battery storage program, offering $500/kWh and significant cost reductions with other incentives, and Communities in Charge, providing up to $6,500 for EV chargers at public-serving sites. These programs support clean energy adoption for households, businesses, and tribes.
Solar Microgrid Methodology (SMM) Curriculum | The Clean Coalition is proud to offer the Solar Microgrid Methodology (SMM) curriculum, a six-week program designed to prepare the next generation of clean energy professionals. This practical course teaches students how to design, analyze, and size solar microgrids using industry-standard tools like HelioScope and Energy Toolbase. With a focus on real-world applications, the SMM curriculum is perfect for students, instructors, and institutions looking to advance their expertise in renewable energy and grid resilience. Get in touch to learn how this curriculum can be integrated into your programs!
