CHIEFS AND MAYOR'S BOOTCAMP
On February 28, Chiefs and Mayors from across the NWT participated in the Bootcamp, facilitated by Christina Benty. They also proudly represented their communities for Pink Shirt Day!

ELECTED OFFICIALS TRAINING
On February 29, elected officials received training on Climate Change and Asset Management with training presentations by Christina Benty, and Municipal and Community Affairs. This was followed by a fireside chat with the K’asho Got’ine Housing Society and an update on Employer Responsibilities by WSCC.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER CHIEF CLARENCE LOUIE
Chief Louie presented to the delegates on Leadership and Development before the official AGM business began. Chief Louie has been leading his community for four decades and is known for focusing on economic and business independence to strengthen his community.

OPENING RECEPTION AND AUCTION
The NWTAC Opening Reception and Auction is a chance for the delegates to kick off the AGM with a meet-and-greet while supporting a local charity chosen by the host community, the Town of Hay River, NT. Through the many donations made by NWT Communities and individuals, this year, we raised over $1185 for the Hay River Animal Welfare Society.

FEDERAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS
One of the many issues that the NWTAC advocates for includes Telecommunications in the NWT. We were excited about the Federal announcement at the AGM of $2.3 million to bring high-speed internet and increased cell access to the NWT!

The Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories announced $1.9 million dollars for Northwestel to bring high-speed internet access to 152 Indigenous households in Whatì and $480,000 for SSI Micro Ltd to provide cellular access to a repositionable communications shelter in traditional hunting and fishing grounds near Fort Providence.
This funding is provided through the Universal Broadband Fund, a program designed to ensure that Canadians in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities have access to reliable Internet and mobile connectivity.

NWTAC and NCIP PRESENTATIONS
Sara Brown, NWTAC CEO, presented the 2023-2024 Annual Report which details the work done by the NWTAC Staff and Board on behalf of the member communities. The NWTAC advocates for communities through Federal and Territorial Government consultations on many issues, including Funding, Polysubstance, Telecommunications, Emergency Preparedness, Infrastructure, Mental Health and Addictions, Climate Change, Housing, Asset Management, Program Design for the North and more. Through our partnerships, collaborations, and advocacy work, we support our members at every turn.

Karen Kuronen presented the NCIP Annual Report, which included topics such as Financial Results, Loss Prevention Incentive Programs, Wrongful Dismissal Liability, and NCIP Members' services (legal support services, appraisal program, loss prevention incentive program, and municipal grant inventory service).
The Hamlet of Tulita was the lucky scavenger hunt prize winner.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER - BILL CARR
Award-Winning Humourist Bill Carr was our last Keynote Speaker before we moved into the last business of the Annual Report and the discussion with Cabinet. Bill's presentation explored the meaning of the word “service” and how it has been diluted. Whether it is an internal customer, an external customer, or our colleagues, connecting with deep service makes for a richer, more productive, and happier personal and work life.

The Arctic Indigenous Film Fund (AIFF) and Telefilm Canada invite proposals from Arctic Indigenous filmmakers to participate in The Witness short film series. This initiative aims to empower Indigenous filmmakers across the Arctic through training and workshops. Selected filmmakers will participate in in-person workshops held in Canada and Norway, receive mentorship from Canadian Indigenous filmmakers, and obtain training grants to produce individual 3-5 minute short films.

ENERGY INNOVATION PROGRAM – METHANE MEASUREMENT AND MITIGATION
The Methane Measurement and Mitigation Call responds to the urgent need to reduce methane emissions in this decade, alongside deep cuts in CO2, to achieve the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature increases to 1.5oC above pre-industrial levels. It will invest in Canadian expertise to accelerate development of more effective knowledge and technologies for methane measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), as well as the mitigation or elimination of methane emissions in Canada.
