LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ORIENTATION | |
MEETING THE NEW CABINET AND MEMBERS!
We are excited to start our work with the new Legislative Assembly! On December 14, the NWTAC had the privilege of meeting with the newly elected MLAs for Orientation. As we welcome the 20th Legislative Assembly and a promising new partnership, we are pleased to see returning faces, new faces, and familiar faces!
MLAs have taken various paths to get where they are now, and we were delighted to see that many MLAs, despite their varied career choices, had served on Municipal Councils before taking on their roles as MLAs.
Raised hands are all the MLAs who have served in Municipal Government!

SUCCESSFUL ADVOCACY WEEK IN OTTAWA!
The NWTAC Board visited Parliament Hill in late November to advocate for NWT Communities. As a member of FCM, the NWTAC President joined with municipal leaders across the country to meet with over 100 MPs to discuss key issues facing the north, including Housing and Community Infrastructure. The focus for NWT Communities is clear – funding and resources for housing and infrastructure, recreation, public safety, water, sewer, and waste removal are essential for strong communities.
Federal funding is necessary to deliver these core services to Canadians and our communities in the North. Talks also included Budget 2024 priorities, the Municipal Growth Framework, and rural and Northern issues. The scope of issues and the strength of FCM reflect the need for the North and municipalities across Canada.
We celebrate the success of Advocacy Week and look forward to continued collaboration and positive outcomes for our communities!
