NWTAC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

LEADERSHIP UPDATE AT NWTAC

With the recent election of former NWTAC President Rebecca Alty as Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, we extend our heartfelt thanks for her outstanding leadership and dedicated service to our organization and the communities it serves. We congratulate her on this exciting new chapter and look forward to continuing our work together in her new role.

We are also pleased to announce that former Vice-President of Cities, Towns and Villages, Kandis Jameson, will be stepping in as NWTAC President until the next Annual General Meeting. Congratulations to President Jameson as she takes on this crucial leadership role — we are excited to move forward together in support of communities across the Northwest Territories.

COMMUNITY GOVERNMENTS

WILDFIRE PREPAREDNESS RESOURCES

NWTAC Wildfire Preparedness Workshop

From April 23–25, 2025, the NWT Wildfire Preparedness Workshop in Yellowknife brought together Senior Administrative Officers, Band Managers, Fire Chiefs, Indigenous Government leaders, and wildfire experts from across all 29 forested NWT communities. Hosted by NWTAC and the GNWT’s Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC), this dynamic event was packed with hands-on sessions, real-world insights, and collaborative planning to strengthen wildfire preparedness and community resilience.

HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

NWTAC 2025 HEALTHY COMMUNITIES AWARD

Congratulations again to the Town of Hay River, the 2025 NWTAC Healthy Community Award winner! Hay River earned this recognition through its exceptional, hands-on commitment to building a healthier, more resilient community. From implementing its 10-year Healthy Community Strategy to expanding housing, recreation, youth supports, and community safety initiatives, Hay River has demonstrated exceptional leadership and action in creating the conditions for everyone to thrive.

They’re using the $5,000 prize money to strengthen that momentum, supporting the Hay River Youth Centre and the local neighbourhood watch program. These investments align directly with the priorities that earned them the award: creating safe, supportive spaces for youth, bolstering community-led safety efforts, and ensuring residents feel connected, secure, and supported. Hay River shows how sustained, community-driven action can shape a healthier, stronger future for all.
