July was highlighted by IHLA's Educational Foundation hosting our 12th Annual Pony Up for the Kids Fundraiser at Arlington Park Racecourse on July 12th. More than 70 attendees had a lot of fun and helped raise more than $16,500 for our Educational Foundation Scholarship Program. Special thanks to Constellation Energy, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Alvarez & Associates, Embassy Suites Downtown Magnificent Mile, DoubleTree Chicago Magnificent Mile, Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport, Conrad Chicago, and Waldorf Astoria Chicago for sponsoring the event, and to Karrie and the IHLA team for putting on this great event at Arlington Park. Some of our guests made money and everyone had a good time supporting a wonderful cause.
On July 16th, IHLA co-hosted with Choose Chicago the 8th Annual Hotel Symposium at Loews Chicago Hotel. Speakers included Vail Ross from STR, who gave her analysis of the Chicago and national hotel market as well as her forecast for 2019. Special thanks to Chris Hansen and his team at Loews hosting the event, and to David Whitaker and his team at Choose Chicago for putting on a great event with lots of valuable information.
July concluded with IHLA hosting 35 young hotel team members at our Under 30 Gateway Networking Dinner Cruise on July 19th aboard the Mystic Blue. This was a great event for the future leaders of the hotel industry to network and learn more about the industry. Everyone had a worthwhile experience and lots of fun on the cruise.
August will be a busy month starting with our General Managers Breakfast Meeting on August 7th aboard the Odyssey ship at Navy Pier. We will have the Senior Director of Public Affairs for Brand USA, Mike Fullerton, featured as our keynote speaker. Mike will share what is happening with tourism at the national level and how that will impact the hotel industry in Illinois during the upcoming year. Also speaking at the breakfast will be Ted Mandigo, who will present his Chicagoland hotel industry forecast for 2019. Ted's forecast should be very helpful to our hotel members as they prepare their budgets and business plans for next year.
Nominations for our 2018 Stars of the Industry program
are due on August 17th. Please nominate all of your top employees in any or all of the eleven categories. This is a great way for you to give your employees industry recognition that costs you nothing. There are no nomination or other fees. All nominated employees are treated like winners and will be recognized at our Stars of the Industry recognition luncheons in October and November. Please submit your nominations HERE.
Finally, August will be highlighted by IHLA's 30th Annual Super Golf Classic, scheduled for August 21st at Harborside International. I hope all members will participate in this special 30th anniversary event. Please join us for great food and beverages, spectacular golf, incredible giveaways of more than 220 golf related gift items, numerous hole contest prizes, wonderful raffles of cash, travel packages, and electronic items, and a variety of online auction items on which to bid.
