President's Message - September 2018
I'd like to once again introduce myself as the new President and CEO of IHLA. I appreciate the overwhelming support that many of you have offered already this week and look forward to meeting you all. I'd also like to thank Marc Gordon for not only his 21 years of service to the Association but also for his guidance and generosity of his time during my onboarding.
As you know, September was a very challenging month for IHLA and the hotel industry in Chicago due to a strike called by UNITE HERE Local 1 against 26 Chicago hotels starting on September 7th. The strike was called one week after the previous contract had expired on August 31st and after very few negotiation sessions were scheduled by the union with the various hotels and hotel companies covered by the union contract. The strike was a very unfortunate event that hurt everyone. We hope the strike will be behind us very soon so that we can get back to our mission of supporting our employees and providing outstanding service to our guests.
As a result of the strike, IHLA's 9th Annual I.H.M.P.A.C. Chicago/Cook County Dedicated Fund Golf Fundraiser scheduled for September 11th was postponed. In addition, the Hospitality Hires Chicago hiring event scheduled for September 19th, that IHLA co-hosts with Chicago/Cook Workforce Partnership, among others, was also postponed. I'm pleased to share that the Hospitality Hires Chicago event has been rescheduled for October 10th at the Palmer House Hilton.
On September 12-13th, AHLA hosted the Legislative Action Summit (LAS) in Washington, D.C. IHLA members held seven appointments with the House delegation and met with both Senators. Thanks to IHLA Board Member, Dave Kimsey, and several other industry representatives from Illinois who joined Marc in representing IHLA in Washington. In addition, AHLA president and CEO, Katherine Lugar, recognized Marc for his service to IHLA and the lodging industry nationwide.
On October 18th, IHLA's Educational Foundation will present an "Important Labor & Employment Topics Impacting Your Hotels" Seminar at Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile. Laner Muchin Partner, Attorney Robert Bernstein, will discuss new labor and employment topics affecting the hotel industry. Please make sure your hotel is protected from harassment claims and you are updated on National Labor Relations Board developments affecting your business. For more details and to register you and your team members to attend this valuable seminar, please click HERE.
Finally, we are excited about the 600 Stars of the Industry nominations we have received from 107 hotels located throughout Illinois. These nominations have been forwarded to our judges who have the difficult task of determining the regional finalists and winners in eleven categories. We look forward to seeing all of our members when we honor all of these terrific nominees, finalists, and winners at our two regional Stars of the Industry Recognition luncheons on October 24th in Bloomington and November 1st in Rosemont. To purchase your tables and tickets, please click HERE for Central Illinois and HERE for Chicagoland.
Best regards,
Michael
