June was a busy month for our hotel members and for IHLA. On June 5th, IHLA kicked off the month with 2nd Ward Chicago Alderman, Brian Hopkins, speaking to our General Managers at The Gwen Hotel, hosted by General Manager, Michael Ditterline. Alderman Hopkins, who represents the north section of the Magnificent Mile area, is one of our greatest friends and supporters in City Council. He spoke about his strong opposition to the proposed mandated scheduling ordinance and his plans to introduce an ordinance to help address the crime issue in the City that negatively affects tourism and our hotels.
On June 19th, IHLA's Educational Foundation Scholarship Committee interviewed the finalists to determine the recipients of IHLAEF's 2018/19 scholarships. Each of our 25 scholarship winners will receive a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and a maximum scholarship of $5,000. Winners will be announced shortly, and over $57,000 will be awarded during the upcoming 2018/19 academic year. Thanks to all of our members who helped make it possible for our Educational Foundation to help these deserving students.
On June 21st, IHLA hosted our 6th Annual Illinois Women in Lodging Mentorship & Networking Cruise aboard the Spirit of Chicago. The event was tremendously successful with over 120 attendees enjoying wonderful food and beverages and great networking opportunities. Thanks to all the women leaders from our member hotels who supported this event.
IHLA is looking forward to hosting our 12th Annual Pony Up for the Kids Fundraiser at Arlington Park Racecourse on July 12th. This event will be a lot of fun and help raise money for IHLA's Educational Foundation Scholarship Program. Finally, IHLA will host our Under 30 Gateway Lake-Breeze Dinner Lounge Cruise on July 19th aboard the Mystic Blue. This will be a great event for the future leaders of the hotel industry to network and learn more about our industry. Graduating from Indiana University in 2016, with a degree in Nonprofit Management and a minor in Event Planning, Melissa moved to Chicago to start her career in the nonprofit sector. After working for a major healthcare nonprofit, Melissa is excited to make her career shift into the hospitality industry working for IHLA. During her free time, you'll find Melissa indoor cycling, trying new restaurants, and exploring all that Chicago has to offer with friends.

I-WIL 6th Annual Mentorship & Networking Cruise
Despite the dark skies, the rain parted and over 120 female leaders in hospitality enjoyed an afternoon of camaraderie, libations, and light bites cruising Lake Michigan aboard the Spirit of Chicago on the first day of summer, June 21st. With no shortage of entertainment and networking, a great time on the Celebration Deck was had by all! Antoinette Cahill, The Drake Director of Catering, was awarded top networker of the cruise. The fun carried over to shore at Riva Café for even more merriment and networking. Thanks to our friends at Entertainment Cruises as they delivered one of our most festive cruises - sailing rain or shine!
