We conducted a thorough review of family engagement efforts in the county and found a fragmented landscape with little collaboration. To address this issue, we proposed a new initiative to promote cohesion among stakeholders.
Interested partners nominated parent leaders for an advisory group. This stakeholder group included organizations such as Community Action Marin, Parent Voices, Parent Services Project, Canal Alliance, as well as school districts and parent leaders.
At the kickoff meeting, we shared data and gathered feedback, which revealed several key insights:
-
Language Barriers: One of the major issues identified was that language barriers hinder effective engagement.
-
Access to Information: Concerns were raised about the difficulty of accessing information that is only available in English. Parent leaders voiced their frustration over how this impeded their ability to fulfill their roles effectively.
-
Data and Communication: Although parents had previously encountered this data, this meeting marked the first time many truly understood its implications.
In response to these findings, the group decided to meet monthly to collaborate on strategies for empowering parents. They aim to complement existing school initiatives and are enthusiastic about driving change in the education system.
