Engine Work and Weather

2115 Monday, August 28, 2023

That is the moon in the upper left of the photo above and Jesse, my mechanic friend, in the lower right. In the next photo below is another shot of Jesse working in the engine compartment. It is about 9:15 PM and Jesse is methodically checking the entire cooling system, among other things. He wants us to have a dependable engine as we begin the 560 mile offshore passage to Halifax. I have a lot of faith in Jesse.

The next photo below is of the engine with a white circle around the new heat exchanger Jesse just installed, the one David brought up from Massachusetts yesterday. I amnhopeful our overheating issues will be behind us.

The next photo shows David and I in a cluttered cabin. We have had to move lots of items out of storage locations to get access to all parts of the engine and cooling system So, liferaft, spare anchor rode, engine oil, foul weather gear, buckets, cushions and other items are strewn about. it will take a little time to stow everything back away.

The final photo is another of Jesse. He always has a cheery disposition, even working late into the night in cramped quarters. He has become a good friend. A very likable fellow!

We will do about four hours of engine testing and checking for coolant leaks. We had hoped to depart earlier today. However, the engine work is critical. At the same time we are balancing and watching the forecasted impacts of Hurricane Franklin that has become a powerful, well organized storm with a sharply defined eye wall. If it holds the projected track, it can actually help us. We do have a couple of places down near Cape Race where we could put into a harborb for 24 hours if the weather looks worse before starting the 320-mile passage across the Cabot Strait to Cape Breton. So lots to weigh in the next 24 to 36 hours. We hope to start on our way by at least first light tomorrow.
