Engineering the Artemis II Space Mission

Powering spaceflight through decades of engineering expertise.

The Artemis II mission launched from Cape Canaveral on April 1, sending four astronauts farther into space than any human before. Behind this historic milestone lies a massive foundation of complex engineering and infrastructure.

The core stage of the RS-25 rocket, which lifted Artemis II into space, was built at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans East. This site has served as “America’s Rocket Factory” since the 1960s. It is where the critical hardware is built to power human spaceflight, including the Apollo, Space Shuttle and Space Launch System programs.

Our legacy at the Michoud Assembly Facility

NELSON has held a supporting role at the Michoud facility since 1952, six years before NASA was formally established. At the time of our first project, the facility was known as Michoud Ordinance Plant and operated by Chrysler Corp. Over the years, our clients at Michoud have included Chrysler, GSA (also during the Michoud Ordinance Plant years), Boeing, Martin Marietta, Lockheed Martin and, of course, NASA.

Engineering is the foundation of civilization, and it is certainly the foundation of space exploration. At NELSON, we offer professional services from design concept to construction administration on a variety of building types to help our clients create complex industrial successes. We have executed more than 40 engineering, architecture and environmental projects at the Michoud Assembly Facility to drive operational efficiency and safety. Our technical contributions include:

  • Design of the Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) Tank Ablator Spray Facility.
  • Rehabilitation design for the Building 303 hangar to support the final inspection, preparation and storage of external fuel tanks.
  • Plant modifications, expansions and repairs.
  • Environmental modifications.
  • Inspection and preparation of plans for facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Power supply.
  • Environmental impact assessments for the industrial wastewater treatment facility.
  • Forensic investigations to determine the root cause of cracking in hoist support structures.

Advancing Testing Capabilities at the Stennis Space Center

The RS-25 engines for the Artemis mission are the most powerful rocket engines ever built. Engineers test these engines thoroughly at the Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi—just 40 miles east of New Orleans. NELSON has provided comprehensive engineering services for dozens of projects at the Stennis Space Center, including the design of several initial facilities.

More recently, our team provided engineering expertise for the 25,000-gpm electric pump expansion of the High Pressure Industrial Pump Facility. This system cools and muffles the rocket engine test stand during operation, ensuring strict safety compliance and testing accuracy.

We are proud of our ongoing contributions to these vital space missions. As we welcome the courageous astronauts safely back to Earth (after a 54-year hiatus from such missions!), we celebrate the dedicated project management and engineering that make these complex expeditions a reality.
