Super Science Saturdays Are Here Again!
Building excitement about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for our youngest students is the goal of the "Super Science Saturday" program, now in its third year in the Berkeley Unified School District. The hands-on, interactive learning program is bringing 301 elementary school students to school on Saturdays! Some Saturdays are dedicated to exploration beyond what's possible at school, and include field trips to the Lawrence Hall of Science, the Exploratorium, the California Academy of Sciences, and Chabot Space & Science Center.

Support from state funding and from the Berkeley Public Schools Fund have made it possible to expand what began as a pilot program in 2014 to a sustainable model that now operates in three elementary schools and is open to students from all BUSD elementary schools.

School Board Seeks Representation on Youth Commission and Facilities Committee

The Board of Education is currently seeking individuals interested in representing Board Directors on the Youth Commission  to fill immediate vacancies. Youth Commissioners must be residents of the city, between the ages of 12-25, and at least half must be junior or high school students.

The Board is looking for parents, educators and community members to serve on the Surplus Facilities Committee for the purpose of determining the possibility of "surplussing" a small strip of land on the Gilman Street side of the BUSD Transportation facility. School district property can only be leased or sold if it has first been determined "surplus" by the School Board with input from a representative community committee.
English Learners Recognized for English Proficiency
One hundred and twenty-seven students, previously identified as English Learners, were recognized during the Annual "Reclassification" Ceremony. With hard work and determination, these BUSD students achieved English proficiency on rigorous state English language assessments.

Student speakers spoke eloquently and from the heart about their experiences as English Learners.  They thanked their families for helping them with their homework, recognizing that their parents were also learning English. Students also thanked the teachers and staff who gave them the opportunity to learn English, and shared how they can now better help their families. Proud teachers, staff, and families filled the room in their honor.
