The Oxford Test of English sponsored a survey by Studyportals and NAFSA, revealing a drop in enrolments for the 2024 intake due to restrictive policies and visa issues in Canada, the UK, and Australia.
The survey, with input from 365 institutions across 66 countries, indicates a drop in enrolments for the 2024 August/September intake compared to last year, highlighting the effects of major shifts in government policy in Canada, the UK, and Australia. Key findings include a 41% decline in Master’s/Postgraduate enrolments, while Bachelor’s/Undergraduate enrolments show mixed trends with 31% reporting a decline and 38% reporting higher enrolments. 93% of universities in Canada, 58% in the US, and 61% in the UK cited restrictive government policies and visa issues as significant challenges. Globally, 11% of institutions view meeting English proficiency requirements as a significant issue, with rates ranging from 7% in the US to 22% in Africa.
