We are pleased to announce that the Amherst Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for On-the-Job (OJT) Training Grants, which are funded by the New York State Department of Labor. These grants present a significant opportunity for businesses to enhance their workforce. Launched on September 1, 2025, and running through August 31, 2026, these reimbursement-based grants cover up to 50% of eligible training costs and wages, with awards from $1,000 to $10,000 per application. Businesses can apply for up to two training programs, opening the door to a range of possibilities for your team's development.

Eligible organizations include for-profit and not-for-profit businesses with at least two employees that have been operating for over a year in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, or Wyoming Counties. Employees must be 18+, work full-time (32+ hours/week), and earn a minimum of $18 per hour. New hires and current staff are eligible; independent contractors are not. The grants target mid-tier roles to drive business growth.

Grants support training in areas like technology, management, or specialized trades, helping businesses retain talent, boost morale, and attract top candidates in a competitive market. To apply, visit amherst.org/grants to confirm eligibility, complete the OJT Grant Application with training details, and submit to grants@amherst.org. A Chamber representative will review applications within two to four weeks. Approved businesses conduct training by August 15, 2026, and submit reimbursement requests with receipts by August 31, 2026.

This opportunity is open to all eligible businesses, regardless of whether they are Chamber members. We believe in the potential of every business in our community and encourage you to visit amherst.org/grants for details and apply on a rolling basis to invest in your team’s future.

The team is gearing up for our signature event, The Event - Celebrating Business Excellence, on October 20, 2025, at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens in Depew. NOCO Energy Forum

This year’s headlines make one thing clear: energy costs are rising—and fast. The trend is undeniable—utility costs are going up, and businesses must be prepared. Yet many lack visibility into the tools and strategies available to manage these expenses effectively.

During this session, participants will gain insight into the future of energy, including emerging technologies and clean energy solutions, learn more about the state’s climate plans and impact of recent federal legislation, and how businesses can utilize resources available to them through incentives and rebates. NOCO President & COO, Michael Casciano, will share how you can take the mindset that you control your business’ energy usage, then you can take the steps needed when it comes to where to use it, where you can save it, and how you can give yourself energy certainty.

Non-members welcome>Open to businesses.

Reminder: Unemployment Insurance Benefit Rate to Increase in October

Governor Kathy Hochul is putting more money back into the pockets of New Yorkers. Next month, the maximum amount an individual can receive through Unemployment Insurance will increase significantly. This is happening thanks to the Governor’s historic payoff of the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund loan.

Scheduled increases to the maximum unemployment insurance benefit have been frozen for years because of the loan, leaving New York's rate at $504 per week. Paying off the loan allows New York to lift the freeze on the maximum benefit rate.

Starting next month, the maximum benefit for unemployed workers will increase to $869 per week.

This will put New York State on par with other regional state rates, increasing support for job seekers who receive unemployment insurance benefits, and making New York more affordable for everyone.

For more information about the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund and to calculate an individual’s potential weekly rate, visit: https://dol.ny.gov/unemployment-insurance-ui-trust-fund-faq.

Breast Cancer Network of WNY is the premier 501(c)(3) non-profit organization for Western New Yorker's who have been impacted by breast cancer. Since 1988, BCN has been dedicated to providing the support, advocacy and curating the overall well-being of breast cancer thrivers and survivors. Through our TLC Totes for the newly diagnosed, our Sisters in Survival support groups aimed for women of color, or our daily free restorative health classes, we offer support to each unique individual. Every cent donated to the Breast Cancer Network of WNY stays in WNY.

BCN is thankful for its volunteers, mostly survivors who want to leave a positive impact on the breast cancer community. This type of support is crucial for continuing to grow as an organization. If you're interested in volunteering, call (716) 706-0060. Visit their website.

September is Sepsis Awareness Month

Infections can put you at risk for a life-threatening condition called sepsis. Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It causes inflammation across large areas of the body and can rapidly lead to tissue damage and organ failure.

Sepsis happens when an infection you already have, such as in your skin, lungs, gut or urinary tract, triggers a chain reaction throughout your body. Sepsis can occur in people of any age. But it is more common in infants, older adults and people who have a compromised immune system that cannot fight infection.

Symptoms of sepsis can include any one or a combination of these:

·       Confusion or disorientation

·       Shortness of breath

·       High heart rate

·       Fever, or shivering and feeling very cold

·       Extreme pain or discomfort

·       Clammy or sweating skin

Act fast!

If you or a loved one has an infection that's not getting better or is getting worse, don’t ignore it. Sepsis requires immediate care in a hospital. Septic shock is sepsis that causes extremely low blood pressure, which limits blood flow to the body and, in some cases, can cause death.

How to prevent infections

Talk to your doctor about steps you can take to prevent infections, such as getting chronic conditions under control and receiving all your recommended vaccinations. In addition, practice good hygiene by washing your hands and keeping cuts clean and covered until they are healed.

To learn more about sepsis, visit Independent Health’s website as well as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
